2018 National Road Race Schedule Released

VEGARRlogo.png

CONCORD, NC - As preparations for the latest edition of Daytona KartWeek approach, WKA Officials are happy to release the 2018 version of the National Road Race Schedule. As a long standing participant in Daytona KartWeek, the Road Race Series will again kick off what will amount to a 7 race national schedule beginning at the World Center of Racing.

The national schedule gets the increase in events as a result of successful discussions with the KART organization in the midwest, returning a much needed midwest venue to the national fold for WKA. Events at Heartland Park Topeka, as well as a return to the National Corvette Museum facility will enhance a national schedule that features a great mix of national venues, including continued relationships with Southern Kart Club and Woodbridge Kart Club.

Additionally, preparations are also in the works for the 2017 National Road Race Awards Presentation to be held in conjunction with the annual awards presentation for the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup Series on December 27. Location and time of the festivities is still being finalized, and will be anounced shortly.

Once the series departs Daytona, competitors get a couple months off before heading to Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah, Georgia for stop #2 with the Southern Kart Club March 9-11.

The third stop on the series will be a change from the past 2 years, as WKA Officials will switch the annual September event at Atlanta Motorsports Park to the weekend of May 4-6.

Stop #4 will be a return to the freshly repaved Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia June 2 and 3. The Woodbridge Kart Club is currently looking into the ability to host a Friday Practice Day, with details coming shortly.

WKC will be the host of the 5th stop on the series, as competitors hopefully find a little cooler weather this year at the famed Virginia International Raceway July 20-22. Strong numbers in the series return to the facility this past year were greeted by incredibly hot temperatures, but fantastic racing.

The insurgence of midwest flavor on the schedule takes center stage for the remaining 2 events with stop #6 at Heartland Park Topeka Raceway in Kansas August 10-12.

From there, the series has a chance to catch its breath, as many tracks will be wrapping up regional programs. The Grand National finale will take place at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, Kentucky November 9-11.

With an increased schedule, competitors will be able to count their best 5 of 7 races for season points, with a minimum of 4 races required to be run to qualifyfor year end awards. For Final 1/Final 2 formatted races, it will be best 9 of 14 races, with a minimum of 8 races run for year end awards.

Here's a look at the 2018 National Road Race Schedule:

Dec 27-30: Daytona International Speedway

March 9-11: Roebling Road Raceway

May 4-6: Atlanta Motorsports Park

Jun 2, 3: Summit Point Motorsports Park

July 20-22: Virginia International Raceway

Aug 10-12: Heartland Park Topeka Raceway

Nov 9-11: NCM Motorsports Park

roadrace.png

CONCORD, NC - For yet another year, Competition Karting Incorporated has garnered the Manufacturers Championship Trophy in the Dunlop / Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting.

The Welcome, North Carolina company, headed by John Klutz, took 7 wins in the season ending Grand National event recently held at Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia, giving them 48 wins on the season.

CKI took wins in the 100cc Piston Port class, as well as the CKI sponsored Yamaha Sportsman Medium class both days. They also took a sweep in Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class, while also claiming 1 win in the X30 Laydown class, and the KALL Racing/ Millers Dynotime Racing Formula 100 class.

In all, 8 different chassis's found their way to victory lane in Atlanta, with Sodi Kart registering 3 wins over the weekend in the 125 Sprint Shifter and Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda classes.

MGM, placing 2nd overall in the 2017 standings with 10 wins, scored 2 wins in Atlanta in the Hoosier Racing Tires Animal Heavy class.

Intrepid got on the 2017 board in the final event with a pair of wins in the West Texas Outlaws TaG Heavy class, while Jaguar, DSE, DR, and Rogetil each scored 1 win a piece.

For the 2017 season, 30 different chassis's found their way to victory lane. Here's a look at the top 5 in the final standings:

CKI: 48

MGM: 10

Elite: 7

Ital Kart: 6

7 chassis's were tied for 5th with 4 wins, including:

Margay, CRG, Arrow, Praga, DR, DSE, and Sodi Kart.

Lorang Caps Off Championship Season With Atlanta Grand National Wins

roadrace.png

CONCORD, NC - Even Hurricane Irma couldn’t stop the freight train that IS Jason Lorang, as the Midwest racer capped off an amazing season, full of travel, with a car loaded with hardware, and wins totalling double digits, including 2 more in the West Texas Outlaws TaG Heavy class, as the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series, presented by Russell Karting, wrapped up its 2017 national season at Atlanta Motorsports Park.

In addition to the sweep by Lorang in the TaG Heavy class, Stephen Wheatley returned to Road Race competition, as the Georgia driver swept the Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Heavy class. Other multiple winners over the weekend included James Cartledge in Clone LO206 Heavy, Hall of Famer Randy Fulks in Yamaha Sportsman Heavy competition, Bill Anderson in Yamaha Senior, and Tony Wimmer in the Animal Medium class.

Coming into the TaG Heavy finale, Lorang held a pretty healthy lead over his closest challenger in Gary Sircy. While sweeping the Animal Medium class both days, as mentioned earlier, Tony Wimmer also helped himself to a pair of runner-up finishes both days, chasing Lorang across the stripe. Brad Adams, Sircy, and John Bryant were the top 5 on Day 1, while the Day 2 top 5 were Bryant, Sircy, and Ashley Michel.

The other title Lorang was chasing was in the KALL Racing/Millers Dynotime Racing Formula 100 class, where Travis Miller and Rick Fulks snared the weekends top honors. Lorang chased Miller to the win on Saturday, while finishing third to Fulks and Sean O’Shea in the Sunday finale.

And where there is one Fulks winning, there typically is the other, as brother Randy swept the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class for the weekend, topping Matt Michel and Bill Holder on Day 1. The Sunday finale found Fulks topping Chad Dokken and Bill Holder.

The wins for Fulks are one thing. Fulk’s unselfish actions are yet another, as for the second straight year at the Grand National, Fulks donated his Grand National Eagles to the future of the sport, as competitors in the Cadet LO206 Class were presented an award by one of the most prolific drivers in the history of the sport.

One of those drivers to receive a Fulks Eagle last year was young Madison Wheatley. Since then, Madison has graduated up into the next age group, and thus scored a pair of wins herself, taking the TaG Junior and Junior Sprint wins over the weekend. While Madison was busy winning, Dad Stephen also made a triumphant return to Road Race competition, taking both days in the Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Heavy class, besting the father/son duo of Rob and Robert Garland, who were in the midst of an extremely tight points battle coming into the weekend. Day 2 found Wheatley back on top, followed by Robert Garland, Rob Garland, Steve Johnson, and Ben Thomason.

With just 30 points separating James Cartledge from catching Andrew Boyer in Clone LO206 Heavy action, Cartledge took full advantage of Boyers absence, taking down the wins in the class both days.

Other classes that were tight coming into the weekend included B Stock, where Robby Harper III held a 35 point edge over Dad Robby, with the elder Alabama statesman taking the win over his son, while Jim Farr Jr, Tom O’Reilly, and Eric Harper completed the top 5.

X30 Laydown was also fairly tight between veteran Gary Schenkel and JC Sanders, as 47 points separated the two coming in. With both on hand, they did not disappoint, both taking a win, Sanders on Saturday over Schenkel, David McCauley, and Paul Wyzga, while Schenkel improved one spot on Sunday over Wyzga, Sanders, and McCauley.

While the bulk of the Road Race competitors were able to attend the event,  Hurricane Irma’s visit through Florida, and her ensuing effects, prevented some of the WKA Family from making the event, including the longtime loyal duo of Kerry and Lance Yunck, who were dealing with the devastation left in Florida in Irma’s wake. Lance also sported a 59 point edge over Sean O’Shea in the 100cc Controlled class coming into the finale. With Lance not able to attend, O’Shea was able to secure the Saturday win over Rick Fulks.

Donald Santini came into Atlanta, sporting a 60 point edge over Thomas Dupont in the 125 Sprint Shifter class, with Tracy Phillips, Denver Liabenow, and Dingus Griffin a very tight top 5 in points. All 5 drivers were on hand with Liabenow taking the Saturday win over Griffin, with Bill Pyles, Dupont, and Santini the top 5. On Sunday, Steven Rougeou took down the win, topping Griffin, Liabenow, Dupont, and Phillips.

Another class hanging in the points balance was the WT Racing IAME Sprint class, where points leader AJ Ellis took the Saturday win over Lee Curtis and Greg Heberle, while points runnerup Gary Sircy, trying to overcome a 73 point deficit, finished 10th. Day 2 found Heberle taking the win over Ellis, with Brad Adams, Sebastian Bushey, and Allan Dawson completing the top 5. Sircy was 9th.

The Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda class had a little bit more of a gap coming in, with Steven Rougeou sporting a 112 point lead over David Harding. Neither driver was able to secure a win, as Brian Fisher took Day 1 action over Stephen Flatt, Mark Nagy, Byron Rothenhoffer, and Rougeou, with Harding placing 6th. Day 2 found Rothenhoffer taking the win over Fisher, Harding, Todd Brown, and Ian Bushey, while Rougeou finished 9th.

Bill Holder came into Atlanta with a 118 point edge over Georgian Matt Michel in the Competition Karting Incorporated Yamaha Sportsman Medium class. Neither driver was able to secure a win over the weekend, as Chad Dokken took the Day 1 honors over Michel, Jeramie Weeden, Lyle Trudell, and Holder, while Trudell rebounded for a win on Sunday over Donald Dump and Michel.

Here’s a look at the balance of the winners over the weekend.

All Systems Go for This Weekends Road Race Grand National

roadrace.png

CONCORD, NC - After keeping a careful watch on Hurricane Irma, as well as staying in constant contact with Atlanta Motorsports Park Officials, World Karting Officials are moving forward with this weekends Grand National event for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting at Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia.

Downgraded to a Tropical Storm earlier this week, as of Tuesday morning, the system began moving out of the state of Georgia, slowly losing energy with each passing day. The end result for the track was steady rain the past couple days, with winds measuring no more than 30mph, which, according to AMP Officials, is no different than their average wind during a normal storm.

With the bulk of the storm now gone from the Dawsonville area, the future forecast calls for cloudy skies Wednesday, with temperatures in the mid- seventies, while the weekend forecast will feature sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-eighties all weekend long.

Officials were concerned just as much with the track of the storm, standing in the way of competitors traveling to the venue, as they were of the impact of the storm at the facility itself.

With the weekend weather threat now in the rearview mirror, it will be business as usual for the series, with the weekend scheduling staying the course. As mentioned in a previous Pit Board however, the Thursday schedule will be modified, due to another customer being on the track until 7pm that evening, thus moving parking and registration back a few hours on that day, until the registration building and south paddock are vacated.

As was the case last year, customers arriving early may stage in the north paddock area, or be parked, if they choose to be in that area, which will be available to WKA all weekend long, as it was last year.

Friday activities begin with a full day of practice beginning at 9am, with on track activity both days beginning at 9am as well.

Anyone wishing camping or power for the weekend need to contact the track directly.

Thursday Schedule Change for Atlanta Road Race

roadrace.png

CONCORD, NC - For competitors planning on running the Grand National event September 15-17 at Atlanta Motorsports Park for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting, there is a modification to the Thursday schedule with regards to parking and registration.

Due to another customer utilizing the track on Thursday till 7pm, WKA Customers will be delayed in getting parked and registered on that day. For those who ran the event last year, many competitors staged in the North paddock area until the South paddock area was cleared for parking. Officials of Atlanta Motorsports Park have deemed the North Paddock area available for parking upon arrival, which essentially is closer to the gridding area for karting customers. As was the case last year, both paddocks will eventually be available to WKA customers throughout the weekend.

WKA will have officials on hand to park customers, but are asking initially if you would please stage in the North paddock area upon arrival, as was the case last year, thus allowing for everything to be put into place before parking commences.

In addition to the parking area, the registration building will also be utilized by SCCA Officials, until their on track day has concluded. WKA will utilize their trailer for pre entry and registration purposes until the building becomes available, thus aiding any customers on Thursday evening, until such a time that the building will become available.

On Track activities for the Grand National event will get underway Friday, with practice beginning at 9am, and running till 4pm. Practice for each race day will begin at 9am, with the days first races scheduled to roll off at 11:15am respectively.

Pre Entry deadline for the Grand National event is Wednesday Sept 6.

Pre Entry Deadline for Atlanta Grand National Sept 6

roadracetrans.png

CONCORD, NC - With the finale for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series just a few weeks away, entries are pouring in for the season ending Grand National event scheduled for September 15-17 at Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia. The deadline to take advantage of the pre-entry pricing is also fast approaching, with the cutoff date set for Wednesday September 6.

Following a most successful debut in September of 2016, competitors have had this date circled on the calendar for quite some time, as the challenging elevation changes of more than 85 feet, along with the high speed the 2 mile course provides, has drivers patiently waiting their next opportunity on the very unique course.

Activities for the Grand National event will get underway with a full day of practice Friday, beginning at 9am. On Saturday, following practice, competitors will take to the track at 11:15am for the first race of the weekend, with the same schedule slated for Sunday. Competitors will not only be vying for the coveted WKA Grand National Eagle, but the battle for the ultimate 2017 points titles will also be on the line.

Garland Notches Impressive 3 Wide Win at VIR!!!

CONCORD, NC - Scorching temperatures in the triple digits all weekend long did not deter a packed paddock area at Virginia International Raceway from putting on some of the best racing of the season to date, as the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting hosted the Summer Nationals, stop #4 of the 5 race national program.

Clearly leading the way in the competition category was the Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Heavy Class. Scheduled for a 30 minute session on track Saturday, the top 6 karts in the class ran nose to tail, swapping positions constantly for the entire 30 minute period, with the end result a 3 wide finish, with Darlington, South Carolina's Rob Garland nipping Jonathan Tedder by 0.001 seconds at the stripe, and midwest invader Regan Vehring 0.050 seconds back in third!!! While 6 karts were part of the battle for the better part of the race, the top 3 edged away in the final laps, with Tony Wimmer, David Clevenger, and Robert Garland completing the top 6. Day 2 action for the Animal Heavy Class found Vehring snaring the win over Ben Thomason, Robert Garland, Clevenger, and Rob Garland.

Packed classes were the order of the weekend, with Pascual Torres taking down the Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda Class Saturday, besting Sky Finley, Stevn Rougeou, Aamir Hyder, and Benjamin Eberhart.  Day 2 found Finley improving 1 spot in the order for the win, with Eberhart, Torres, Hyder, and Collin Johnson making up the top 5.

Jason Lorang was up to his usual grueling weekend schedule, as the midwest ace topped the West Texas Outlaws TaG Heavy field on Saturday, turning back Gary Sircy, Ashley Michel, Brad Adams, and Charles Speacht. Brad Adams took the Day 2 TaG Heavy action, topping John Bryant, Gary Sircy, Ashley Michel, and Lorang. Lorang also dipped in to the ultra competitve CKI Yamaha Sportsman Medium field, chasing eventual winner Nate Grindell, Chad Dokken, and Tim Linthicum across the stripe in Saturday action. Brandon Schenkel made up the top 5. Sundays Yamaha Sportsman Medium action found former champ Matt Michel back on top, taking the top honors over Bill Holder, Schenkel, Lamar Hilliard, and Simon Whitnell.

The WT Racing IAME Sprint field was also jammed this past weekend, with AJ Ellis drawing first blood on Saturday, taking down Greg Heberle, Clark Gaynor Jr, Travis Waddell, and Sebastian Bushey. Gaynor rebounded on Sunday for the win, besting Ellis, Heberle, Tiffany Fisher, and Waddell.

The Yamaha Sportman Heavy field was also loaded with immense talent, with Illinois ace Randy Fulks sweeping the weekends action, first besting Sean O'Shea, Scott Clark, Bill Holder, and Brandon Schenkel on Day 1, while O'Shea, Chad Dokken, Nate Grindell, and Scott Stauffer made up Sundays top 5.

Derek Somers also pulled out the broom over the weekend, taking the WKA Sprint finals both days, besting John Leins, James Leins, Louie Magiera, and George Lincoln on Day 1, while James Leins, Magiera, and John Leins chased Somers on Sunday.

Travis Miller also pulled the broom out of the closet as well. Following engine issues at Summit Point, Miller stormed back to sweep the Millers Dynotime Racing/KALL Racing Formula 100 class, besting Lance Yunck, Ian Morgan, Dennis Griffith, and Jason Lorang on Day 1, while Morgan, John Scavuzzo, Yunck, and Kristina Griffith completed the top 5 on Sunday.

Updates from last year include food concessions that will serve breakfast and lunch, as well as overnight security, allowing competitors to come and go, as long as they have their credentials with them. Electrical hookups are available at a rate of $15 per day.

Due to an ordinance imposed by the city of Dawsonville, Georgia, the track is not allowed to utilize a working pa system. However, AMP is acquiring an FM System, of which the frequency will be made available when customers pick up their weekend handouts.

Battle of Tires to Highlight VIR Road Race Weekend

CONCORD, NC - Located in the shadows of one of the many Goodyear Tire Manufacturing Facilities in nearby Danville, Virginia, it’s only fitting that stop #4 for the Dunlop / Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting,  will be the site of a friendly little wheel war July 21-23 at Virginia International Raceway in neighboring Alton, Virginia.

As competitors prepare for the Summer Nationals at the famed Virginia Road Course, both Jim Russell Jr of Dunlop, the series title sponsor, as well as Adam Batton and the folks of Hoosier Racing Tires, have elected to have a little fun with a few classes on Saturday afternoon, thus awarding a set of tires to winners in 4 specific classes. The classes of choice are the following:

Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Heavy

Yamaha Sportsman Heavy

WT Racing IAME Sprint

Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda

In order for a driver to be eligible to receive the tires, he/she MUST be running either the Dunlop or Hoosier brand on all four corners of the kart.

Tires, and/or certificates for the tires will be available at the track for competitors on that weekend.

The Battle of the Tires adds yet another element to the prestige of racing on one of Americas legendary road courses. With the North Course being repaved in July of last year, competitors are more than ready for a return to the historic course, a key race in the battle for the respective overall national titles, with the Grand National event at Atlanta Motorsports Park in September hanging in the balance as the deciding race to determine the 2017 national champions.

In addition to tires being awarded on the track, there will also be 2 sets of rain tires given away during the weekend.

Tons of national and local option classes will be offered on that weekend, ranging from Cadet Karts to 4 different Vintage Classes, offering something for every age group available.

Activities for the VIR Summer Nationals get underway with a full day of practice Friday, followed by two jammed packed days of racing Saturday and Sunday.

Drivers wishing to enter can do so by going to: Woodbridgekartclub.com and registering.
