THE VEGA ROAD RACE SERIES & 2019 AWARDS BANQUET AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY

CONCORD, NC - The 2019 WKA VEGA Road Race Series awards presentation will be held at the Champions Club located at Charlotte Motor Speedway, in conjunction with the WKA national races being held that weekend, April 17-19th. The Awards Banquet will be held on Friday at 7pm, where dinner will be  served at 7:30pm and the awards being given at 8pm.
 

The Awards Banquet includes a full Dinner comprised of the following; Smoked pork, North Carolina vinegar and Levy signature barbecue sauce with southern fried chicken, baked beans, baked mac and cheese and gourmet cookies and a brownie sampler for dessert.  The cost is $40 per person.

Registration Opens for Round 2 of the WKA Vega Tires National Road Race Series Southern Kart Club hosts Roebling Road Event

As the 2020 Racing Season shifts into high gear, WKA and event host SKC wasted no time after the 45th Daytona Kartweek to make registration available for the second stop of the WKA Vega Tires National Road Race Championship, March 6-8, at Roebling Road Raceway in Bloomingdale, Georgia.

Kart Week Rockin’ 45 Years at Daytona International Speedway

The week after Christmas many families are traveling back home after the holidays but for go kart racers home is Daytona International Speedway.  This year the World Karting Association celebrated its 45th year racing at the legendary track.  Many of the racers today still remember the 1st race that was held at Daytona in 1974. There are also quite a few go karters that can say that they have never missed a year racing here which adds up to a lot of miles traveled.  From grizzly granddads to little kids, every age group will compete for the bragging rights of the 1st place trophy from Daytona International Speedway.

This year we added another awesome racer and supporter of sport to the WKA Hall of Fame.  Tod Spaude was presented with the plaque at this years event adding his name to a long list of legendary racers including his father, Bill Spaude.  Tod is the owner of TS Racing, which has been a long-time supporter of the Road Race Series. Congratulations Tod!!

With rain in the forecast for Daytona Kart Week, many were hoping that it would blow over and leave nothing but clear skies for the days ahead.  Unfortunately, that was not what mother nature had up her sleeves.  Move in day started out with sunny skies but as the afternoon drew near the heavens opened up and created undesirable track conditions.  When practice day rolled around many were hoping that the track would dry out enough to make a few laps but again mother nature had different plans, which only allowed for a few rounds of practice.  Sunday also had rain in the forecast but again many were hoping that it would dissipate and allow the racers some practice time and allow the race schedule to start.  Sadly the 1st race which was the Cadet LO206 and Jr. LO206 class was the only one that was able to race that day.  By mid afternoon race officials made the decision that the track was not going to be suitable for racing and officially called it a rain day. 

By Monday many were itching to get out on the track and were hoping that the racing gods would be smiling down on them and as luck would have it, they were.  Race officials were able to get in quite a bit of practice before having to start the races.  They also decide that they needed to shorten all the races to ensure that they finished due to possible rain in the afternoon.  The 30-minute races would be shortened to 15 minutes and the 45 minutes races would be shortened to 25 minutes. 

The 1st race of the day brought out 30+ racers to the grid.  The Stock Honda class came out with an impressive 15 racers.  With the class filled with a ton of veteran racers it was bound to be an exciting race.  With the shortened race many had to change their strategy as they wouldn’t have as long to make their moves.  Steven Rougeou who is no stranger to the checkered flag found himself in 5th place at the start of the race and this ensued for most of it.  It wasn’t until the last lap that he decided it was now or never.  He took the position in the infield and then drafted around Cole Peschang rather than be behind him down the back straight. This allowed him to gain the draft from the 1st and 2nd kart while still having a drafting partner to my rear. The head wind on the front straight let his gearing choice take advantage for a pass around the leaders.

“I was powered by SRS Engines who has given me 3 wins at Daytona. Great support from my family; my father Bo Rougeou, my wife and mother for helping to make this year’s trip possible. A thank you to WKA and all my competitors; the Daytona win wouldn’t be as special if it weren’t for the high esteem given to it by everyone. This win is for my daughter Katherine.”

The 3rd race which included the Yamaha Senior class had over 20+ racers ready to fight for the checkered flag.  This race brought out a lot of veteran racers, with a few of them having attended the 1st Kart Week here in Daytona.  One name that is resonates within the karting family is Fulks, who were one of the ones to attend the inaugural race.  Many know the man that started it all, Reggie Fulks who then passed down his love of karting to his sons Randy and Rick.  Coming off the 1st lap of the race, Rick Fulks led the Yamaha Senior class but by the 3rd lap Brad Zoeller had taken the lead but it was short lived as Randy Fulks made a pass on the infield road course to take the lead away.  Around the halfway point, Rick Fulks once again took the lead and pulled way from the group with Randy Fulks, Keith Freber and Brad Zoeller vying for 2nd place.  Keith Freber then took advantage of a mishap and led the group a lap or took but it was short lived as Rick once again took the lead.  On the last lap Randy made a move in the west horseshoe to pass Rick who continued to draft behind him.  Randy took the checkered flag with Rick 2nd and Brad Zoeller finishing 3rd.

The IAME Sprint race brought almost 30 racers to the grid. With this many racers there was bound to be some good ole fashion racing.  But with the race shortened to only 15 minutes many were going to have to make their moves sooner rather than later.  Starting in the back were the Brown brothers along with the Cherry’s which made for an interesting start because quite a few of them got tangled up and put them in the back of the pack.  After a few laps the Browns and the Cherry’s were back in the game shortening the distance between them and the lead pack.  By the last lap the lead pack consisted of the Cherry’s, Brown’s, Jason Lorang and Alex Mayer, but who would have the right moves to take the checkered flag.  Coming down the straight away from Nascar Turn 4 Scott Cherry ended up passing Matthew Cherry with Jamey Brown drafting right on his tail.  As they neared the checkered flag Jamey tried to make the pass at the last minute but came up short and Scott Cherry taking 1st place.

Race 5 in the Unlimited class also brought out 20+ drivers ready to take on the Daytona high banks.  Right at the drop of the green flag Johnny West took the lead and never looked.  Following close behind was Denver Liabenow, who did happen to have the fast lap time for the Unlimited race, but unfortunately it wasn’t ever enough to take the lead from Johnny.  Again, with a shortened race many racers did not have enough time to formulate a strategy to pass the leader.  In the end Johnny West took home the 1st place trophy with Denver Liabenow coming in a close 2nd.  Brian Wilhelm took home a 3rd place finish but ended up with the top speed for the weekend at 159mph. 

“Many of the racers were a bit disappointed when the weather reports came out with scattered showers for the next three days. The World Karting Association did a great job manipulating the time so that on the final day we were able to squeeze in practice and also get in all the races” says Johnny West.

The last race of the day included the CIK LO206 Sprint class which brought a whooping 41 karts and the TaG Heavy class which had 25 karts.  Along with the other few classes that were apart of race 7 a total of 90 karts were gridded and ready to take home the 1st place Daytona Cup.  Right out of the gate Richard Hoff came down the front straight away on the first lap in 1st place with Kyle Banovetz and Jeremy Yancey hot on his trail.  Unfortunately, this race was cut even shorter than the 15 minutes due to a red flag that happened coming into the infield of the road course.  With only 2 laps being made the finishing order was determined by the position of the driver at the time of the red flag.  Richard Hoff was able to snag the 1st place finish and took home the coveted Daytona Cup trophy.

The TaG Heavy race was also a packed race with a lot of familiar face.  Paige Evans started towards the very back of the grid and when the green flag dropped, she took off like a rocket. From the start of the grid to turn one she had managed to make her way through 10 drivers weaving in and out of the chaos. Going through the infield she continued to make her way through the rest of the pack.

According to Paige, “I got onto the oval and was in disbelief of how quick my Praga Dragon Evo kart really was, the Rok GP that was powered by Swedetech was just screaming and passing the other drivers like they were stopped.”

 As she gained on the leaders her next move would be crucial, tuck in and draft or take the high side and pass but as luck would have it, she took the high side and took a hold of the 1st place position.  In one lap Paige had gone from 23rd to 1st without any hesitation.  Regrettably a red flag was thrown and cut the race to only 2 laps. 

“Knowing I had secured the victory gave me so much joy, in the scale line I got to my dad who is also my mechanic and my biggest supporter who engulfed me in a massive hug. All of the hard-work this year had finally paid off and thank you to all of my teammates for the endless support, I could never do it without you guys!

Again, a big thank you to the racers that came out and braved the weather at the 45th running of Kart Week at Daytona International Speedway.  Hope to see everyone at the next stop on the Vega Road Race Series, Roebling Road.

KICK-OFF EVENT FOR 2020 WKA MANUFACTURERS CUP IS ON THE HORIZON

With the opening event of the 2020 World Karting Association (WKA) Manufacturers Cup only three weeks away, series officials continue to plan and prepare for the annual event. Taking place in the confines of the famed Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, the 45th Annual Daytona Kart Week and WKA series continues to evolve with the addition of the Vortex ROK engine platform and huge prize packages for series competitors.

The Race for the Grand National Eagle

After freezing rain and low temperatures last year kept many karts off the track on Friday and cold weather looming in the forecast many racers were hesitant to make the trip back to NCM Motorsports Park for the last race on the WKA 2019 schedule.  With the racing Gods looking down, the weekend turned out to nothing but clear and sunny.  This was also the last chance for many karters to secure the points chase for WKA’s Road Race National Championships.  While this race closed out a fantastic racing season it also brought some sadness to the racing community.  Last week we lost a great man and friend to all in this little world we call karting. Randy Holewski was an avid enduro kart racing fan who started racing when he was 15 years old. He shared the love of the sport with his daughters, Stacey and Amanda and later his grandson Carson.  He was a great supporter of the sport and when he wasn’t out there on the track, he was always on pit road cheering on not only his daughter Amanda but also his grandson Carson.  He will be missed by all but never forgotten.

 The 1st race of the weekend was the CIK LO 206 Sprint which brought 14 karters to the grid.  With John Morris leading the class in points, would he be able to secure the wins in Kentucky?  At the drop of the green flag number 118 Jamie Bradford took the lead and never looked back.  He continued this pace for the entire 30 minutes bringing home the checkered flag with a huge lead over 2nd place Stephen Gibson.  Sunday’s race was again looking exactly like Saturday’s race with Jamie Bradford taking an early lead.  Except this time number 707, Ryan Gensheimer was hot on his tail.  The battle continued throughout the race with Jamie, Ryan and Joel Negus.  In the end Jamie took the win with a 1 second lead and also took home 2 Grand National Championship eagles this weekend. 

 The 1st race also had the IAME Sprint class racing which held some great racing as well.  Jason Lorang came to Kentucky leading the IAME Sprint class over Gary Sircy, but would he have the speed and skill to bring home the points championship for 2019?  The battle for the top positions started early and continued till the checkered flag was waved.  Coming down the straightaway on lap 1, Jason Lorang was leading the charge in 1st place followed by Brad Adams and Richard Buckley.  Ultimately Jason kept his lead over Brad Adams and took home a Grand National eagle.  Sunday’s race in IAME started out a lot different with a mishap in turn 1 causing drivers to scatter every direction.  Fortunately, most drivers were able to keep things going including Jason Lorang, but he was at the back of the pack.  With lady luck on his side he was able to drive his way back to the lead position and take home another eagle. 

“I think the cold weather which has become the normal in Bowling Green had us all getting creative to stay warm, but the weekend warmed up nicely!  Even with the cold temps, I found myself over a second a lap faster in both karts over last year, which helped me get the checkered in all 4 races this weekend! What a great way to finish the year! Now, it’s time to focus on Daytona and 2020.”

The Unlimited class on Saturday also brought 14 karts out to fight for the checkered flag.  Unfortunately, the race was cut short due to 2 red flags.  One right after the start of the race and another one about halfway through.  Thankfully there were no major injuries to either driver.  Most of the Unlimited’s were only able to make 5 laps in Saturday’s race, which lead number 111 Larry Dobbs to take home the eagle.

Sunday’s race painted a very different picture in the Unlimited class which was able to run the full 30-minute race. Right from the start Sidney Danals took the lead from the rest of the pack with Denver Liabenow running in second.  This pace continued for the full race leaving Larry Dobbs unable to take another eagle. Even though Denver Liabenow took home a 2nd place finish in Sunday’s race it was just enough for him to secure the points championship over Mike Tracy.

The last race of the day on Saturday was full of action with 6 classes, each racing for the championship.  The TAG Heavy class brought nothing but domination to the track with Jason Lorang leading the way with a 37 second lead over 2nd place Jarrett Bank and 3rd place going to Adrian Dale.  Even with the cooler temperatures he was finding the speed coming out a second faster than last year.  This win at NCM Motorsports Park helped him secure the points championship in TAG Heavy along with IAME.  Lady luck was also smiling down on Jason as he once again took home 1st place in Sunday’s TAG Heavy class.  Unfortunately, she was not spreading the luck to anyone else as Jason Lorang again snagged the 1st position with a full minute lead over 2nd place, Lucas Mauer.

With recruiting new people to the road racing side always being the topic of discussion amongst karters, it was nice to see newcomer Evan Stamer out on the track in Kentucky.  Evan has a major presence in the sprint world but has started making a name for himself here on the road race side.  This past weekend he took his place in the Yamaha Senior class with racing veterans, Randy and Rick Fulks, Brad Zoeller and Patrick Olsen.  On Saturday, Evan settled in behind Patrick Olsen at the start of the race, where they battled back and forth for a few laps.  Around the halfway mark Evan tried passing Patrick for the lead but regrettably a red flag was thrown and ended the race, which landed hime a 2nd place finish.

“I wish the race would have continued though because it was panning out to be an awesome race to the end, say Evan.”

Sunday’s race in Yamaha Senior was also a fantastic race for Evan and for the spectators.  For the first couple laps of the race the battle was tremendous as each driver was relentlessly fighting for 1st place.  Sadly, on lap 3 Rick Fulks ended up blowing a motor and Brad Zoeller dropped out due to mechanical issues, but this didn’t stop the remaining 3 from fighting for the checkered flag.  The battle continued but veteran Randy Fulks had just the right setup as he was able to pull away from Patrick Olsen and Evan Stamer winning the Grand National Eagle for Yamaha Senior.

“The race on Sunday was definitely high up on my list of the most fun I’ve had in a go kart, me, Rick and Randy Fulks, Patrick Olsen and Brad Zoeller were all battling and going back and forth for about 4 laps at the beginning of the race. It was such an honor to be able to race against and go head to head with the most legendary drivers in karting at one of the most legendary tracks in the U.S. NCM was such an amazing facility, the track was super fun, it was very smooth and flowy.  It was overall a great track for the karts we were racing. I hope we will be able to go back soon!”

Much of the ManCup has been enhanced for 2020. We have added the Rok Cup Classes and enhanced the race format. Here are a few reminders to help during the registration process;

Most importantly, ManCup PRIZE PACKAGES will be announced in the next couple of days!

• Early Bird Discounts are available for racers registering by November 27. Tiered Pricing will be employed after November 27, with the next pricing level cutting off December 10. After December 10, “at-track” registration pricing will take affect.

• Qualifying Order for all classes will be determined by order of Pre-Entry only. Drivers who pre-entered first will be lined up for Qualifying first, and so on.

WKA Announces 2020 Vega Tires National Road Race Schedule

45th Year at Daytona Kartweek, and A Long-Awaited Return to Mid-Ohio Top the Highlights

CONCORD, NC - After tireless planning by WKA Officials and the Road Racing Competition Committee, WKA is pleased to announce its 2020 Schedule for the Vega Tires National Road Racing Series, for points in WKA National Classes. A bit of a break from the norm, WKA racers will enjoy bringing back a couple old track friends, coupled with the traditional regulars, and a few surprises along the way.

Topping the 2020 campaign is the return to Daytona International Speedway for WKA’s 45th visit to the facility for Kartweek, December 28-30, 2019. After that, WKA makes its regular stop at Roebling Road with the Southern Kart Club, March 6-8. A change to the date brings the series to the second annual WKA Charlotte Motor Speedway Karting Challenge, also serving as the WKA Grand National for 2020, where the entire Roval has been reserved for Road Racers, April 17-19. May brings a second return to the Gateway Motorsports Park with host CES, May 8-10, as well as an affiliation with long-time partner Woodbridge Kart Club, with a stop at Summit Motorsports Park, May 29-31. Mid-Summer brings a long-awaited favorite to the calendar, where WKA will return to Mid-Ohio, June 19-21, thanks to an agreement with the DART Kart Club and AKRA. A trip up north is slated on the schedule with a visit to Grattan Raceway with CES, July 10-12. KART hosts the August round at Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, August 14-16. After a well-deserved late-summer break, WKA will once again join hosts DART and AKRA in a new-for-WKA event, for the final round at Pitt Raceway Park, September 25-27.

National Championships in 2020 will be decided with a minimum participation of 6 finishes for classes with one final per event, and 12 finishes for classes with F1 and F2 per event. WKA National Classes offered at all events on the schedule.

Registration Now Open for WKA Vega Tires Grand National Road Race

K.A.R.T. and CES join WKA for Round 6 November 8-10 in Bowling Green KY 

WKA brings its 2019 Road Racing season to a close with a huge bang, the WKA Vega Tires Road Race Series Grand Nationals, November 8-10 at the famed National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky.  Not only will National Championships be decided at the event, National Classes will also be racing for the coveted WKA Grand National Eagle, and the bragging rights that go along with it.

Adding to the fields this year, partner groups K.A.R.T. and CES will bring their drivers for the three day event in Kentucky.

Summer Sizzler Returns to Heartland Park

As summer comes to an end the Summer Sizzler has return for the 2nd year to Heartland Park in Topeka, Kansas.  The Summer Sizzler is a joint venture between 3 great karting organizations, WKA, KART/MARRS and CES.  This race is the 2nd race this year that these 3 groups have gotten together in hopes of bringing in a diverse group of karters.  With Kansas bringing the scorching temperatures there was bound to be some hot and heavy racing as well. 

Starting off the weekend of racing was the Sprint B&S LO206 class.  On Friday this race brought out 14 racers, but that number increased to 27 on Saturday and 26 on Sunday.  With Lindsey Simon leading the points race with the KART organization, would she have what it takes to bring home a 1st place finish.  Unfortunately, lady luck was not on her side this weekend, but there was some great racing fighting for the checkered flag.  With thunderstorms the night before practice was late getting started which meant not much time to prepare for the race Friday afternoon.  That did not stop Joel Negus from dominating the track.  Right out of the gate Joel was passed by the majority of the field with Jason Lorang leading the 1st lap.  It didn’t take long for Joel and his pack, Craig McNeese and Stephen Gibson to track down the leader and take over the top 3 positions. They continued to hang on to the lead with Joel Negus securing a 1st place finish.

“We could tell right from the start of the race that our gearing was quite a bit taller than the competitors. We started towards the front but by the first corner the majority of the field has passed us. It didn't take long for our gearing and top speed to move us to the front. I lead every lap with my race buddies right behind me.”

Again, Kansas thunderstorms pounded the track Friday night and left it with a few rivers in a couple of the turns.  This left many karters with little track time to prepare for the afternoon races, but this did not stop Joel and his crew.  This time they started out leading the field but only after a couple of laps they were overtaken by another pack of karters led by Stephen Hefley.  Unfortunately, this victory was short lived, as Joel Negus and his teammates had once again tracked down the leaders and secured the win.  Regrettably Joel’s luck would run out on Sunday as teammate Craig McNeese secured the win at the line in the Sprint B&S LO206.

“Heartland park track is a fantastic smooth fast track. the facilities are first class and we can't wait to go back. Our LO206 kart reached a top speed of 77 MPH which was the fastest we have run on any road race.”

The Sprint 125cc Shifter class also brought out the karters with 24 on Saturday and 19 on Sunday.  Russ Pyles came to Heartland Park leading the points race in WKA, but would he have what it takes to bring home the checkered flag?  Right out of the gate one of the top contenders in the class was Pierce Baldus, who has been busy running the ROK circuit.  Having an off weekend, he decided to run the Summer Sizzler in hopes of bringing home gold.  With the drop of the green flag, Jeff Mills had the horsepower and gearing to separate himself from the rest of the class. He continued this pace for the entire race with a 24 second lead.  Pierce Baldus and Coltin Craigo didn’t let this lead discourage them as they continued to battle for 2nd and 3rd.  Ultimately Pierce won the battle and took 2nd place by only .10 of a second over Coltin. 

Again, Sunday brought a little water on the track, but this did not stop the 125 Shifters from fighting the good fight for 1st place.  This time Jeremy Lightwine and Pierce Baldus were able to break away from the pack early on. After just a few laps Jeremy slowly made his move by driving away putting 6 seconds between himself and Pierce.  With only 4 laps to go Pierce was able to overtake the lead from Jeremy but this would be short lived.  Unfortunately, Pierce’s luck would not hold as Jeremy took the checkered flag beating Pierce by 0.15 seconds. 

“All in all, it was a great karting weekend, I recommend marking your calendars for Heartland Park in 2020. Looking forward to the Kart MARRS National Championship Race at Gateway Motorsports Park October 4th through the 6th. Thanks to Trei at Tanda Racing and the rest of the team, Goya Foods, my tuner Alex Norris and my mother and father. Thank you all for the support.”

Even though the Sprint IAME class did not bring the numbers they made up for it in good ole fashion racing.  Leading the 1st lap the Brown brothers worked together to separate themselves from the group by lap 4.  This would not last long as Jason Lorang hunted them down where they would continue to battle for the entire race.  In the end Jason had what it took to overtake the Brown racing team securing the checkered flag. 

After a disappointing loss on Saturday the Brown racing team was determined to come out with a win on Sunday.  With a gear change and some chassis adjustments Jaime and John came out swinging.  Right from the start they were able to separate themselves from the rest of the group with Cole Peschang hot on their trail.  After only a couple of laps Jamey Brown started pulling away from teammate John, while Jason Lorang overtook the 3rd position from Cole Peschang.  This battle continued for the rest of the race with Jamey winning by almost 30 seconds over teammate John Brown.

According to Sunday’s Sprint IAME winner Jamey Brown, “Topeka was an incredible event that we were proud to be a part of. With the race being a combined event, you always wonder just how many racers will show up. The 3 organizations came together for the sport of Karting and made it work for the benefit of the racers. It is really special to see what can be done in our sport when organizations come together and focus on one goal.”

Your current number is yours through the Grand National race at Bowling Green, National Corvette Museum Motorsports Park which is November 8th thru the 10th.

WKA Karting Challenge lands at Charlotte Motor Speedway

It’s been a hot minute since the World Karting Association has raced at Charlotte Motor Speedway with the last time being over a decade ago.  This time WKA brought the triple crown to the track with not only Road Racing but also the Manufacturer’s Cup and the Dirt Series.  With WKA’s headquarters being located right there in Charlotte, North Carolina it only made sense to try and bring karting back to its roots.  This event not only brought out the seasoned veterans who had race here before, but it also brought racers trying to scratch another awesome track off their racing bucket list. 

            For those that do not know the history behind this track, Charlotte Motor Speedway was designed and built in 1959 by the current chairman and NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee O. Bruton Smith.  Also, the late Curtis Turner, another Hall of Fame inductee, served as Smith's primary business partner.  Together, they built the 1.5-mile superspeedway on the outskirts of the Queen City and, on June 19, 1960, the first World 600 happened at the new facility.  In addition to the 1.5-mile oval, the Charlotte Motor Speedway complex includes a 2.25-mile road course, which was used this past weekend by both the Road Race Series and the Manufacturer’s Cup Series.

            This weekend also marked a momentous occasion with the induction of Robby Harper to the WKA Hall of Fame.  The Harper family has been a household name in the karting world for 4 generations.  In fact, Robby’s mom, Eloise used to race old 40’s Ford coupes for a few years at a half mile dirt track called the Iron Bowl just outside of town near Tarrant City back during World War II.  Robby got into karting around age 14. They really weren’t racing karts at that time; it was more like yard karts. He and his friends used to race them in a made-up course in the dirt parking lot of Huffman Ballpark behind the local Jim Skinner Ford Dealership.  In the early 70’s the owner of Huffman Cycle Shop and Lawnmower Repair saw something in Robby and offered him a chance to race in an actual go kart.  They had a Fox kart with a Mac 10 engine and started racing at the Talladega Short Track.  From that point on Robby was hooked and has been a part of many different karting organizations.   During the late 70’s and early 80’s Robby began promoting different races. He started by organizing indoor dirt races at local agricultural centers in North Alabama, like Cullman, Oneonta and Priceville. Eventually all the promoting and hard work led Robby to create the Big South Road Racing Series with the help of Chuck West (Southern Kart Club / Roebling Road), Johnny Jacumin (Kershaw, Rockingham).  In the mid to late 80’s Robby brought his 3 sons, Robby III, Daniel and Eric, onto the racing circuit with the Margay sprinters with 5hp Briggs engines and now even has his grandson Austin racing in the cadet classes.  In the early 2000’s he became a member of the WKA Board of Trustees, and he is also the WKA National Enduro Director, promoting national events at places like Charlotte Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motorsports Park and NCM Motorsports Park. Robby’s held many roles over his 52 years in karting from being a really talented driver, maybe an even better tuner, a multi time and defending WKA National Champion, a race promoter, a race director, flagman, tech man, a parts builder, a WKA trustee, and maybe most importantly one heck of a race dad/grandad. Congratulations Robby Harper.

This past weekend definitely brought out some good ole fashion racing.  The 1st race of the weekend was the CIK LO206 Sprint class which had 26 karts gunning for the 1st place trophy.  Matthew Turner came out of Nascar turn 4 leading the 1st official lap with Jerry Turner, Jeremy Yancy and Miguel Ruiz all drafting in the front pack.  Eventually Matt Turner and Jerry Turner were able to break away from the pack, while Clark Gaynor Jr and Gary Campbell were able to work their way through the pack of racers to 3rd and 4th.  Matt was able to hold onto the lead to secure a 1st place finish, while Jerry Turner took 2nd and Clark Gaynor Jr finished 3rd.  Unfortunately, Matt Turner was not able to secure another 1st place finish in the CIK LO206 Sprint class on Sunday.  That honor went to Kyle Banovertz who took the checkered flag while Trey Kelley placed 2nd and Matt Turner taking 3rd.

Race 3 on Saturday also brought an impressive amount of karters. The Animal Sprint 390 class hosted 24 karts all hoping to take the checkered flag at the WKA Karting Challenge.  Regan Vehring took the led right from the green flag and never looked back.  Croix Beasom was hanging onto 2nd place for quite a few laps, while Jonathan Tedder was in 3rd.  Coming into the halfway mark of the race, Regan was still holding onto the 1st place position while Jonathan Tedder had taken over 2nd place and TJ Zimmerman had worked his way up to the 3rd.   On the next lap TJ Zimmerman finally made it around Jonathan Tedder to take P2.  He and Regan were able to break away and get a little lead over 3rd place.  In the end Regan had what it took to secure the checkered flag and P1.  TJ Zimmerman took 2nd, while Daniel Ring worked his way up to a 3rd place finish.  Sunday’s race was just as exciting with the top 3 racers from Saturday fighting to take home the 1st place trophy.  Regan Vehring just didn’t have enough to secure the checkered flag, but Daniel Ring brought his determination which led him to victory lane.  TJ Zimmerman once again brought home a 2nd place finish, while Regan Vehring took 3rd.

Yamaha Senior brought their A game on Saturday with a great race between veteran drivers Brad Zoeller and Rusty Benson.  Brad came to Charlotte leading the points in Yamaha Senior while Rusty was 5th in points.  Brad had the lead at the green flag on the 1st lap with Rusty breathing down his neck in 2nd place.  By the 7th lap Rusty had taken over the 1st place position but Brad was not far behind.  This game of cat and mouse continued for most of the race until Rusty spun out but was able to recover and finish the race.  Brad Zoeller took the checkered flag with a 1st place position with Rusty Benson coming in 2nd and Nate Morgan securing a 3rd place finish.

“This was one of the most challenging races I have run in my 50 years of racing karts.  I feel fortunate to leave Charlotte with two wins, beating not only several formidable competitors but a challenging track as well.  I would like to thank TS Racing for the great horsepower, Vega Tire for superior grip, and RRR racing for providing a winning chassis.”

 The IAME Sprint race on Sunday brought 18 racers to grid ready to bring home the 1st place trophy.  Gary Sircy came to the CMS Karting Challenge leading the class in points, but would it be enough?  Heading down the straightaway on the lap 1, Clark Gaynor Jr, Gary Sircy and Blane Aarup made up the lead pack while Indy Kassy was hot on their trail.  After only 6 minutes, Indy Kassy had already taken over the lead position with Clark Gaynor falling back to 2nd, while Cole Peschang and Jason Lorang had worked their way to 3rd and 4th.  By the halfway mark Jason Lorang had moved up to 1st and had pulled away from the pack consisting of Gaynor, Kassy, and Peschang.  With less than 10 minutes to go Cole Peschang had taken over the 2nd place spot trying to chase down 1st Jason Lorang.  In the end Jason Lorang was able to hold into his 1st place spot over Cole with only 0.121 seconds between them.  Indy Kassy was able to hang on with a 3rd place finish. 

"It was a challenging weekend,” explains Jason. “With evolving track configurations and different weather conditions each day, in the end Charlotte treated me well... 3 times!"

The Unlimited class on Sunday came to race because unfortunately Saturday’s race was rained out.  Leading on the 1st lap was none other than a member of the Harper family Robby Harper III.  Right on his tail was Dusty Dean and Robby Harper followed by Brian Wilhelm.  By the 10-minute mark Robby Harper III was still hanging onto 1st place with Brian Wilhelm following behind.  With less than half the race to go Brian finally secured the 1st place position over Robby Harper III.  Robby Harper moved up to the 2nd place position while Mitch White held onto 3rd place.

According to Brian, “The track was more interesting than the map showed. If you’re going to race, you need to be able to adapt to different type tracks. I had a great time and I look forward to next time here!  WKA did a good job of putting on this event and accommodating everyone.”

WKA Charlotte Motor Speedway Karting Challenge Registration and Garage Spaces Available for WKA Vega Tires Road Race Event

CONCORD, NC - Gearing up for the WKA Charlotte Motor Speedway Karting Challenge, the organization has made Registration and Garage Spaces available for the WKA Vegas Tires Road Race Series portion of the event. 

Together with the Woodbridge Kart Club, WKA brings the regular Road Racing National Classes, as well as added Local Option classes to run on the famed Charlotte Roval.  Building off popular Sprint Classes in Road Racing, Open Sprint has been added to the docket with two Finals.  Additionally, to celebrate WKA’s rich history at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, two Vintage Categories have been added, Vintage Piston Port and Vintage Open, each with two Finals for the weekend.

“With WKA’s long-awaited return to the Charlotte Motor Speedway,” stated Kevin Williams, WKA’s President, “our road race committee wanted as much possible opportunity available for road racers to participate on the Roval at Charlotte, which is why the additional classes were added.  It will be exciting how many Karters will be able to say, ‘I raced the Roval!’ ”

WKA Announces Charlotte Event Name, Class Structures & Registration Date

CONCORD, NC - After extensive work and dedication from the WKA Staff, Trustees and Executive Team for WKA’s return to the Charlotte Motor Speedway, June 21-23, the World Karting Association is pleased to bring the event into a little more focus with the announcement of the Event’s Name, Class Structures, and Track Layouts, all available at worldkarting.com.  Registration for all three races will be available Memorial Day.

Together with the Charlotte Motor Speedway, WKA announces the event name, the Charlotte Motor Speedway WKA Karting Challenge in Concord, NC.  Branding the event as a major step in establishing identification to help Karters from all disciplines to plan their racing commitments.

With input from all the WKA Series Committees, Class Structures for all three racing programs are now available.  National Classes from the WKA Tech Manual are included for both the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup for Sprint Racing, and Vega Tires National Road Racing Series for Road Racing, while Speedway Committee Members recognized an exciting line up for the MaxxisSpeedway Dirt Race.  Local Option Classes offered for the Sprint Track will include the Briggs 206 (CIK Chassis) Senior Class, while the Road Race will invite Open Sprint and Vintage Piston Port and Open racers to the event.

With a well-orchestrated plan to establish safe, competitive, raceable track layouts for all three programs, WKA Staffers solicited industry experts to design and maximize the track layouts for the WKA Karting Challenge at Charlotte Motor Speedway.  Road Racers will enjoy the majority of the famed Charlotte Motor Speedway “Roval”, (without the back straight chicane), leaving a substantial amount of the Roval available for the Sprint Racers, both racing in counter-clockwise direction.  Conversely, the Speedway Dirt Racers will relish a modified version of the renowned Charlotte Dirt Track to do battle Friday and Saturday nights of the event weekend.

WKA Crowns 2018 Vega Tires Road Racing Series National Champions

2018 Champions Celebration Scheduled for
Roebling Road Event, March 9

As in years past, WKA will honor the Champions and top-five qualified finishers of the WKA Vega Tires National Road Racing Series at the early spring event at Roebling Road, Saturday March 9, 2019, immediately following the day’s races.  With the assistance of hosts Southern Kart Club, tickets will be available at the event, Friday, March 8.

Tickets are $15 and must be purchased by the end of the day on Friday, March 8th. A ticket will include; 1/2 a roasted chicken, two sides, dessert and drinks.  The location of the awards ceremony will be the Roebling Road Pavillion.

“Of all the things we do at WKA, thanking our members and honoring our Champions is a great way for us to promote our racing programs.” Stated WKA President, Kevin Williams, “With a year’s worth of racing, it’s important to take time to thank our racers, and promote the series champs.”
