A disappointing 15th-place qualifying effort had Chavous starting deep in the field in the weekend’s headline race, Unilli Tire Pro Clone, which saw 63 drivers take time in qualifying. Chavous drove one of the best races fans will see all year, quickly moving to the front of the pack by lap nine and fending off Austin Yarbrough and Seth Seckinger as the laps wound down. Chavous scored the $10,000 victory to put an exclamation point on a big Daytona KartWeek.
After two consecutive years of “Disco” Donnie Nall earning the $10,000 Pro Clone wins and bragging rights as the top senior racer at Daytona Dirt, Chavous can lay claim to that title for 2014.
In all, Chavous entered eight classes, winning three, finishing second once and third twice. He was a DNF in Yamaha — most likely the least-competitive class he entered — and he was a DNF in Pro Animal.
Nall had a down year at Daytona. Heading into the event as the favorite after the aforementioned two consecutive Pro Clone wins, Nall only won twice at Daytona and neither win in overly impressive fashion. Only four drivers entered Pro Gas Animal and to no one’s surprise Nall scored the win. He also won Champ Heavy after Hunter Mallory was DQ’ed in post-race tech. Nall’s only other top five came in Sunday’s Champ Lite, which saw him finish fifth; Joe Clower scored the Champ Lite win over Seth Lunsford.
The only other senior driver to score multiple wins in senior competition at Daytona Dirt was Daniel Simmons, who kicked off the event with a win over Chavous in Animal Medium and quickly backed that up with a win over 41 other entrants in Animal Heavy. Seth Lunsford finished second to Simmons in Animal Heavy.
Simmons cooled off after his Animal Heavy triumph; the South Carolina racer would only accomplish one more top-five, coming with a fifth-place effort in Pro Animal.
Fifty drivers entered the Charger Racing Chassis Pro Animal main and it was senior rookie racer Colby Horner of Tennessee scoring the big $5,000 triumph. Horner scored the big win over Bryan Fauntleroy with Jerry Mullis taking third, David Whitener fourth and Simmons fifth.
Georgia’s Spencer Davis took some time away from his fledging stock-car career to once again compete at Daytona Dirt. In his first Daytona as a senior driver, Davis had a big day Sunday, winning No-Pro Animal and scoring the Pro Animal and Animal Medium Van-K Wheels Pole Award. However, Davis was denied of a second win on the day but he did race to a third-place finish in Animal Medium behind Simmons and Chavous and fourth in Monday’s Clone Heavy behind Chavous, Riggins and JR Tippens.
Other senior class winners at Daytona Dirt were Michael Smith in No-Pro Clone; Jesse Riggins in Clone Medium, Jerry Mullis in Animal Senior Stock, JR Tippens in Clone Lite; Jesse Fox in Clone Super Heavy; Dick Timmons in Animal Super Heavy; Rick Hockman in Clone Senior Stock; Chad Haithcock in Limited Modified and Jason Easterling in Yamaha.
Lance Chitwood, Logan Tucker and Trynt Lloyd all raced to double wins in junior racing at Daytona Dirt, while Eli Beets won three races.
Beets won Junior 1 Clone Lite and Heavy and scored the Pro Junior Clone win over Chase Stewart.
Chitwood was one of the top Junior 3 racers all weekend with Sunday wins in Junior 3 Lite and Pro Gold along with a second-place effort in Junior 3 Clone Heavy.
New York’s Richard Murtaugh was arguably the “other” top Junior 3 racer; Murtaugh won Junior 3 Clone Heavy and finished second to Chitwood in Pro Gold and second to Andy Ward in Junior 3 Clone Lite.
Molly Raven won Pro Junior 3 Clone and Tyler Diel scored the win in Junior 3 Clone Champ.
Logan Tucker swept Junior 2 racing on Sunday with wins in Junior 2 Lite and Pro Junior 2 Heavy. Tucker won over Austin Teras in Junior 2 Lite and over Devon Morgan in Pro Junior 2 Heavy.
Morgan and Colin Bernstein split the Junior 2 Clone wins Monday. Morgan captured Junior 2 Clone Heavy over James Seeright and Bryce Vanlancker. Bernstein won Junior 2 Clone Lite over Morgan, Seeright and Tucker.
Lloyd won over Beets in Junior 1 Lite and Ira Mattice in Pro Junior 1 Heavy.
Austin Teras won Sportsman Champ Blue and Shawn English won Sportsman Champ Green.
