07.11.2016 - Dominion Road Race National Cancelled. Replacement Date and Venue Being Finalized

rr_logo.2016.png

CONCORD, NC - World Karting Association, Woodbridge Kart Club, and Dominion Raceway Officials regret to inform national karting competitors of the cancellation of the scheduled July national road race event for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting.

The cancellation of the Dominion event continues the unfortunate theme of the Road Race season, as this venue was set to take the place of the traditional July event originally set for Virginia International Raceway. Unfortunately, when VIR Officials informed WKC of their plans to shut down during the month of July for a complete repaving job, after the date and venue had been set for weeks on the national calendar, the wheels were set in motion to expedite the ability to put the newest venue in Virginia into play.

An immediate visit by WKA the week of the VIR announcement set plans into place, with the intent of the Road Course being ready for organized racing as early as April. Several ensuing visits by both WKA and the WKC, working with Dominion officials in a consulting capacity, kept the hope of a July national intact. However, the winter months of heavy snow, joined by 18 days of rain in a 22-day period in May helped further delay the efforts by the Dominion staff to get the necessary work done, delaying a test by many karting competitors until July 7.

The end result of the test indicated a need for a few areas of continued upgrades from a safety and comfort standpoint for competitors. Given the remaining amount of work that would need to be done in a short period of time, it was mutually decided by both WKA and WKC to cancel the event for this year, with the hope of returning back to the facility later this year for another test session to determine if this could be a potential national venue for 2017.

In the meantime, WKA is working on finalizing a venue and date for the 5 race national series, which should be announced shortly. At present, the next scheduled event for the series would be the series Grand National event Sept 16-18 at Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia. Entry Blank information will be available shortly.

World Karting and Woodbridge Kart Club did not take this decision lightly. Several days and hours of discussions following the test led both groups to this most painful decision. While it is completely understood of the enormous inconvenience and potential cost this has created for competitors, engine builders, sponsors, vendors, and many more, it was a very easy decision to make when it came to the safety of the competitors, not wanting to take a series to a track that is on the cusp of completing its course, thus looking out for the future best interests of the facility, and the wellbeing of the drivers. While it is not expected to soak in immediately, it is hoped everyone will eventually understand, that by taking a mutual stand here, the payoff will be much greater for Dominion Raceway, WKA, WKC, and all of their members whose best interests always come first, thus paving the way for a much brighter schedule for 2017.

Our sincerest and deepest apologies to all involved.

Respectfully,

The staff of WKA

CONCORD, NC - The karting family is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of TNT Kartways owner and Wisconsin native Gus Traeder. Born on a farm in Rome, Wisconsin, Traeder began his working career at the age of 24 as manager of a Montgomery Wards store in Quincy, Missouri. In just 2 short years, the business was recognized as the #1 farm store in the nation.

In the late 50’s, Gus was introduced to go karting though a store promotion. Not long after, Traeder built TNT Kartways in West Quincy, Missouri. Just 6 years later, kart racing was introduced to the world, as ABC’s Wide World of Sports televised the National Championships, appropriately named The Grand Prix of Karting. The event would run for the next 30 years. In the early seventies, Gus created the now famous Miller Gran Prix Carting Classic in Quincy’s South Park.

In addition to his major karting contributions, Traeder was also a loyal supporter of the Quincy Blue Devil Basketball Program for over 30 years, eventually donating the scoreboard which hangs in the gym to this very day. The Blue Devil Basketball program was but 1 of many various groups that Gus supported for many years.

Traeder is a member of the Talladega Hall of Fame in Alabama, is the inaugural member of the Vintage Racing Hall of Fame, a member of the Quincy High Sports Hall of Fame, and was inducted into the Quincy Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in 2013.

While Gus would have been 91 August 9th, he truly left his mark on the karting and sports world for the better part of his ninety years on this earth.

Visitation will take place Thursday June 16 at Luther Memorial Church in Quincy, Illinois from 4-7, with the funeral set for Friday at 11am at the same location. Donations of flowers can be sent to:

05.26.2016 - Remembering What is Most Important This Weekend

WKA-logo-4C-CS3-small.png

CONCORD, NC - For many, this weekend is circled on the calendar every year as the greatest weekend in motorsports, a long 3-day weekend, a weekend of picnics, parties, concerts, and celebrations. As we celebrate some, or all of those events, while you’re sitting at the race track, or at the picnic table, take a moment to reflect on the many people who fought, bled, perished, and are still fighting for the freedom you have to enjoy your family and friends, the events you have the great luxury to attend, the freedom to get in your car and go where you want, do what you want, and hang out with who you want.

We have true heroes in our military who are fighting to make sure you have that luxury, one that all too often is taken for granted, not purposely. But because we are so caught up in our own lives that truly pale in comparison to what our brothers and sisters in the military are going through each day.

When you sit at the track, consider the seat you are in. Your military isn’t fighting to join you in the seat next to you. They are fighting first and foremost to make sure you will always have the freedom to have the seat you are in, to continue to enjoy what you love the most in life, while hoping one day, they may have the same luxury, but only after they are comfortable in the fact that you are well protected.

And when the weekend concludes, and you head to your next weekend, albeit not as special as this past weekend, remember your service men and women, who are fighting to continue to provide you that same freedom, no matter how special or dull your weekends are. For them, there IS no dull weekend.

Forget the animosity, the complaining of long lines in airports and on the road, or at the grocery store, and remember the people who fight for you to have the freedoms we take for granted each day.

On this weekend, and each day, WE REMEMBER OUR MILITARY. God Bless you all, and God Bless America!!!!!

03.25.2016 - General Reminder of Long Standing Rules for National Events

03.25.2016 - General Reminder of Long Standing Rules for National Events

WKA-logo-4C-CS3-small.png

CONCORD, NC - As both the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup and RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series venture into the month April with their respective national events, WKA would like to remind our loyal customers of some very important rules pertaining to the events, prior to, and during the functions. WKA goes to a considerable amount of effort through their Board of Trustees, Competition Committees, and Office Staff to create rules that will provide a safe, fair, and enjoyable atmosphere on and off the track.

For starters, the purpose of the respective national entry blanks for each event is to not just enter for the event. The entry blank also provides key information pertaining to the event, including one very key element. See below.

Notice to all Competitors:

While the entire portion of what is written in this area is critical, the part that requires attention is the usage of Bikes, Skateboards, Hover Boards, Scooters, etc in the pit and paddock area. From the time WKA enters the track property on Thursday until the time the last checkered flag falls, usage of these items is forbidden. The only items that should be rolling in the pits are karts, kart stands, anyone who requires a wheelchair as their means to get to and from the pit area, and officials who are using golf karts to either use as part of parking, occasional garbage pickup, and helping to keep the facility clean. Nothing else is allowed. Anyone is caught violating this policy will be stripped of their mode of transportation for the weekend, and could be subject to further penalties.

Dogs must be kept on leashes, and are not allowed to run freely through any pit area. As many have witnessed at Daytona, animals in the past were not even allowed in the pit area. So please do not abuse this privilege. Maintain your animal on a leash.

Rule 13 on the Driver Info Sheet: ALL engines may ONLY be run in 2 locations. 1) In the competitors designated pit area, or 2) On the starting grid, 2 minutes before the karts are released to go out onto the track. Running engines is prohibited at any other location in the racing facility.

As a competitor arrives at registration to take care of their respective entries for the weekend’s events, there is a complete breakdown of the weekend schedule, including a timeline, as well as general rules for drivers with regards to qualifying and race procedures, including tire rules for the respective classes. Many long hours of thought and hard work go into what is typed on those sheets, and professed at the Drivers Meeting. And it asked by the organization that you take a few moments out of your day to familiarize yourself with all of that information.

The WKA National events are some of the most prestigious in the country, historically. There is a great deal of pride in putting on the events for the staff of the organization, as there is for you, the competitor, to stand proudly on the podium, earning a hard earned victory or top 3 effort. We genuinely respect and care very much for our customers. WKA only asks for the same in return. Please respect and obey the rules of the organization and the facility. And we will all have a wonderful weekend.

Respectfully,

The Staff of the World Karting Association

01.19.2016 - David Cole Joins WKA as District 6 Trustee

01.19.2016 - David Cole Joins WKA as District 6 Trustee

WKA-logo-4C-CS3-small.png

CONCORD, NC - The World Karting Association is proud to announce the addition of David Cole as the newest member to the Board of Trustees, following the most recent election. Cole, a resident of Grand Rapids, Michigan his entire life, will be serving as Trustee in District 6, covering the states of Michigan and Ohio. Coles background in karting has been very extensive. From being a fan at a very early age, to getting behind the wheel at the age of 10, Cole’s experience that he brings to the board spans many avenues of the karting industry, helping to not only provide knowledge from a competitors standpoint, but also from the aspect of clubs and regional touring series, as the Michigan native also volunteered his time in the nineties and early 2000’s, working with the Michigan Kart Club and Mid State Super Series.

Since 2005, Cole has managed the largest karting website in the country, ekartingnews, thus adding yet another angle from which to help and promote the sport. Attending numerous events in the US and Europe, Coles vast travel schedule allows him to also bring the many different perspectives from a track promoter and owners standpoint to the table as well, further making him a well rounded choice for a Board seat.

Like many in the industry, Cole is hoping to find a way to help the sport where it is lagging the most, the grass roots level, local racing specifically, as well as club and regional levels of the sport, hoping to re-stabilize the true foundation of the karting industry, assuring the top levels of the sport, the national events, remain healthy as well.

Joining Cole on his team are his 4 Cycle Representative David Kalb from Cleveland, Ohio, as well as Bob Cole, his 2 Cycle rep. Kalb also brings a ton of experience with him, with a son, David Jr, who is currently successfully competing in both the WKA Mfg Cup and Gold Cup programs, as well as many other programs in karting, and who also recently came away with one of the LO206 Junior wins at Daytona in Round 1 of the all new WKA Winter Cup program. A graduate of Ohio State University, David also is no stranger to operating a facility, having been the president of Thompson Kartway in 2011, wearing all the hats that go with the title, including that of Race Director.

Bob Cole also brings a wealth of years and experience to the table, serving as the 2 Cycle Rep. With roughly 42 years under his belt in the racing industry, Bob’s focus will include the Road Race program, as the recently retired motorsports veteran has plenty of time to chat with the people in the industry, as well as continue to attend many races in the midwest.

WKA welcomes the 3 newest members to its Board of Trustees Table, and looks forward to working with each of them, as the momentum in the karting industry continues to get stronger as of late.

Additionally, WKA would like to also extend its sincerest thanks and appreciation to Jerry Cole, the most recent Trustee in District 6 the past several years. Through his business, Michigan Kart Supply, Cole has served as sponsor, racer, Director of the Great Lakes Sprint Series, and has spent countless hours working with both the Gold Cup and Road Race programs, helping to enhance them year after year.

01.11.2016 - Tom Speaks Appointed Lead NRRS Tech Official

01.11.2016 - Tom Speaks Appointed Lead NRRS Tech Official

WKA-logo-4C-CS3-small.png

CONCORD, NC - WKA Officials are proud to announce the appointment of Alabama’s Tom Speaks as the lead tech official for the 2016 season on the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting. Speaks, a mainstay in the tech barn for WKA National Road Race events for many years, has also been a familiar face for competitors in the RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series this past year, joining Bobby Gettys and Randall Lyles as a very solid 3 man Tech Team for the top 4 Cycle Sprint program in the country. While Speaks will now attend all the Road Race Series national events this season, he will again be on the Gold Cup Series, as well as join Gettys and Lynn Haddock for the remaining 2 events for the inaugural Winter Cup Series at Jacksonville, Florida and Mooresville, North Carolina.

The move falls in accordance with the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup and RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series, in which Gettys and Haddock have been the lead tech inspectors for, thus giving Road Race the same consistency the other series have with the same lead tech official now at all the events.

Speaks and Haddock wrapped up the 2015 season in fine fashion in the Tech Barn in October in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and Speaks led the team back to Daytona with Dave Armstrong and Scott Sanders, netting very positive results. Speaks next event for Road Race will be the March 11-13 event at Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah, Georgia, where he will be fully involved in tech, as well as render the final decisions on all karts in tech for the balance of the year.

12.16.2015 - Helpful Hints For Daytona KartWeek

12.16.2015 - Helpful Hints For Daytona KartWeek

Daytona-Speedway-e1444178866360.jpg

CONCORD, NC - As competitors begin to make plans to converge on Daytona International Speedway for the latest edition of Daytona KartWeek December 27-30, here are some customer friendly tips that may be of help to everyone spending the holiday week at the World Center of Racing. For those arriving prior to the Christmas Holiday, the speedway provides a section of the West Lot for trailer drop-off early, given the fact that many hotels may not have large enough parking to accommodate trailers. The West Lot is located at Gate 40, which is the main gate competitors will be entering Dec 28-30, the day after Parking Day. Gate 40 is located off of Williamson Blvd. As a note of interest, the West Lot will not be open Christmas Day. Anyone that needs additional help once they are down there may call (386) 405-1500.

As an added note to the backside of the event, if competitors are staying in Daytona on the final evening of racing on December 30, they will be allowed to again use the West Lot to drop their trailers off, provided they pick them up before noon on December 31.

If competitors are arriving on the 27th, they will again turn onto Williamson Blvd, and follow the Directional Signs down to the first stop light, which is Midway Drive. Turn left at Midway Drive, which is parallel to the Daytona International Airport, and follow the Directional Signs to Gate 70. You will turn left into Gate 70 then be staged, then proceed to get your pit passes, as well as tow vehicle and rv passes, if you reserved a spot for the West Lot on the Dirt, or Lake Lloyd if you are competing with the Road Race or Mfg Cup Series.
