Gold Cup Points Battles Head to Camden for the 4th!!!!

CONCORD, NC - Less than 1 month removed from the heat of Kershaw, South Carolina in the Kart City Performance Nationals, The RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series hits the track for stop #3 of the season this weekend in Camden, Ohio at G and J Kartway for the Michigan Kart Supply Nationals.

While Mother Nature may give competitors in the rolling corn fields of Ohio a little better break, temperature wise, the hotly contested battles for national titles will continue at the home of the Ohio Valley Karters Association.

Headlining the battle is the continued dogfight for the top spot in the Coyote Motorsports Senior Pro Gas Animal class, one of the largest classes of the year. Coming into the event. Corey Towles sports a slim 5 point advantage over Sean Meier, with Zach Linsell, Matt Mayes, and Tyler Smith not far behind. Towles grabbed a runnerup spot and a 4th in the 2 days of competition at Kershaw, and looks to pad that points lead this weekend.

While this is clearly the closest battle in the national points, of all classes, 1 weekend slip can tighten things up in any class, as the Camden event serves as the final tune-up before the Grand Nationals in Barnesville, Georgia in September.

Austin Queen brings the points lead in the Briggs and Stratton LO 206 Heavy class, another well attended group in 2015. Queen’s consistency has netted him an 80 point lead over his next closest challenger in Eric Fagan, a winner at Kershaw. Also expected to battle are Haley Kummer, Patrick O’Neal, Michael Clark, and Evan Cowen.

Jim Lipari and Paul Headley bring points leads to Camden as well in their respective classes, Animal Medium, and the Power Plus Lubricants Animal Heavy Mix classes. Cayla Chapman and Josh Stiefel have been strong contenders in these respective classes this year, and figure to give the points leaders a run for the money.

Owen Lloyd, a winner on Day 1 at Kershaw in the Tyler Sandmeyer LO206 Kid Kart class, brings a 60 point lead in the standings to Camden over defending series champion Jax Walker.

Meanwhile, Sportsman drivers have had to learn their ABC’s all over again, not by choice though, as Aiden Baker Crouse has been lighting things up in the Razor Chassis Sportsman Pro Gas Animal Light, Baker Racing Engines Sportsman Pro Gas Heavy, as well as the Miller Welders Sportsman LO 206 classes, leading the points in all 3 categories, after taking 5 out of a possible 6 national wins in South Carolina. Crouse will be heavily challenged throughout the weekend as Riley Kelley, the only driver to win other than Crouse in Sportsman competition at Kershaw, will be loaded for bear at a run for another few wins. Other drivers set to battle for the 4th of July title include Tanner Carter, Cale Hall, Macon Moore, and Mark Steube to name a few.

Matt Miller brings the points lead in both the Van K Wheels Junior Pro Gas Lite Class, was well as the Brads Heating and Cooling Junior Pro Gas Animal program. Set to challenge Miller this weekend are Jason Alder, Joshua Stark, Jimmy Cole Jackson, Kershaw hot shoe David Kalb Jr, and many others.

Meanwhile Cody Hall leads Alder, Miller, Jackson, and Nash Duyn in the Thor Oil Junior LO 206 class. Hall and Alder swept the main events in Kershaw with 40 points separating the top two point contenders.

Activities for the Michigan Kart Supply Nationals get underway with a full day of practice Friday, beginning at 8:30am. Following practice, the first of 3 Money Race events will be held as Brads Heating and Cooling presents the Sportsman Pro Gas and Junior Pro Gas 10 lap shootouts, each race paying $200 to the winner, $100 for second, and $50 for third, with trophies being awarded to the top 5. Following the Shootout races, the best in Senior competition take to the track for the Senior Pro Gas Money Race.

Saturday and Sunday activities will start at 8:30am both days with practice, followed by qualifying, heat races, and main events.

Klutz Takes Over for Bartlett as WKA District 3 Trustee

Klutz Takes Over for Bartlett as WKA District 3 Trustee

CONCORD, NC - WKA Members in the state of North Carolina now have a new, but familiar person that will serve the remaining term as the District 3 Trustee in their region as John Klutz, the 2 cycle representative in North Carolina will fulfill the remaining balance of District 3 Trustee Johnny Bartlett’s term, which will expire after 2015.

Bartlett, a well-known and well-respected member in the 4-cycle community, has recently taken on his own business in engine building. And with the long hours and dedication it takes to get a new business up and running, Bartlett felt he needed to give his new venture 100% of his time and effort.

While Bartlett will remain very active as a strong 4-cycle voice to the World Karting Association, members can relax in the fact that another longtime staple in kart racing in John Klutz will be assuming the District 3 Trustee role. Long known for his success with Competition Karting Incorporated out of Welcome, North Carolina, Klutz brings a wealth of knowledge, not only in 4 cycle racing, but also serves as another delegate to the National Road Racing Series, a series in which CKI has been an integral part of for decades, which includes Johns father, and WKA Hall of Famer Dan Klutz.

The position move is effective immediately. And since Klutz is fulfilling a vacancy, he will have the opportunity to run for 2 consecutive terms, once this term is completed. This year serves as the final year of Bartlett’s term, as ballots will also be going out later this year for Districts 6 and 9, serving Michigan, Ohio, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Maine respectively.

Members of North Carolina having questions for Mr. Klutz can direct them to (336) 731-6111

WKA would like to thank Mr. Bartlett for his years of service to the Board of Trustees, as well as the WKA office and its membership, and looks forward to continuing to work with him in the future.

BRASELTON, GA - June 16, 2015 - Skip Barber Racing School alumnus and IndyCar Team owner Bryan Herta will continue his participation and support of the Skip Barber Karts to Cars Scholarship event with the extension of the Bryan Herta Career Enhancement Scholarship Award.

For each of the next three years, Herta will choose a deserving Karter participating in Karts to Cars Scholarship Shootout. The recipient will receive a scholarship award in the amount of $15,000 in racing credits to be applied to the Skip Barber Race Series. Herta will award the scholarship to the racer who he finds to be the most passionate, driven, and talented.

The Skip Barber Karts to Cars Scholarship Shootout is the largest and single most important event for karters transitioning into race cars. Past winners of Shootout awards include A.J. Allmendinger, Ryan Hunter-Reay, Ricky Taylor, Jonathan Goring, and Joel Miller. Scholarships are courtesy of Skip Barber Racing School.

Herta launched his scholarship in 2014 with an award to Dakota Dickerson, who came in 2nd place in the Karts to Cars Scholarship Shootout. Dickerson is currently enrolled in the Skip Barber Racing School Summer Series and has garnered 70 points at Road Atlanta for the season opener and 79 points at Lime Rock Park for Rounds 3 & 4 of the Series. Dickerson currently sits second in the overall championship point standings and will travel to Road America July 6-9th in an attempt to capture the top spot.

“This award was born from a conversation between Michael Culver and myself during the 2014 Shootout. I was impressed with Dakota Dickerson and his overall skill and attitude and wanted to see what we could do to help. Michael suggest we create a new Scholarship, and I am extremely grateful to be able to stay involved with the Skip Barber Racing School and Race Series, their program is second to none and they are truly committed to training the future champions of our sport. I can’t wait to see the next crop of drivers this October,” said Herta.

Bryan Herta will continue providing the scholarship to the most deserving participant for the next three years, but in the meantime, you can catch him and his team - Bryan Herta Autosport - competing in the Verizon IndyCar Series and new this year, Bryan Herta Rallysport which competes in the Red Bull Global Rallycross series.

Herta is a big supporter of Skip Barber Racing School alumni - the current driver for Bryan Herta Autosport is Gabby Chaves, who trained in the Skip Barber Racing School system and is the 2014 Indy Lights Champion. In 2007,  Chaves won the Skip Barber Racing School Karts to Cars Scholarship at the age of 13, breaking the previous record set by Formula 1 Reserve Driver Alexander Rossi, who won at the age of 14.

CONCORD, NC - The near 3 month wait between the second and third national event for the VEGA/TSRacing National Road Racing Series is just about over, as many sprint and laydown national competitors set their sights on the first of 2 trips to the legendary Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia this weekend for the Summit Point Nationals.

Making things even more interesting this weekend will be the absence of the full day of practice on Friday, challenging drivers to shake off the rust in their respective Saturday morning practice sessions before it’s time to play for keeps in the first of 2 days of national competition.

8 groups of racing will take place on Saturday as a large portion of the 53 national classes will take to the track, along with several Local Option Classes provided by the Woodbridge Kart Club. Included in that grouping will be a special 8th race for the Cadet Kart Class. Other Local Option classes on Saturday will be WKC Vintage Limited, Classic Controlled, Open Sprint 1, Vintage USA, and Junior CIK Lite.

On the national side, tight battles are abound in the standings. One of the many tight classes is in Stock Honda where 10 points separate series leader and Roebling Road winner Stephen Flatt from Mark Nagy in Stock Honda 1. Success has been better for Nagy on Day 2 of the program where he leads Chris Hines by 15 points.

In the Streeter Super Stands Stock Leopard class, Robert Wimmers win at Roebling Road has brought him to third in the standings behind leader Walter Troup and Jay Ellis as that battle will continue this weekend.

Emmitt Rodriguez heads to Summit Point this weekend, sporting a 24 point lead over Michael Ray in the Tag Heavy standings. While Amy Hollowells Roebling win in the Junior Sprint Lite class gives her a strangle hold on that class. Hollowell also leads the Junior Sprint Heavy standings.

Tight battles are abound in a ton of the Animal, Yamaha, and Clone classes, making the third national event of the season oh so critical in the run for the national championship.

Activities for the Summit Point Nationals get underway Saturday with gates opening at 6am, and practice following at 8:30. Race #1 for the 8 race Saturday program will get underway at 11am.

6 national races will headline the Sunday activities with practice at 8:30, followed by Race #1 at 10:15am.

CONCORD, NC - The June event for the RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series may just be round 2 of 4 for the series, but for Aiden Baker Crouse and David Kalb Jr, this past weekends edition of the Kart City Performance Nationals at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina appeared more of a knockout punch in a battle of the best 4 Cycle Heavyweights in the country, as the 2 drivers combined for 9 wins over the weekend.

CONCORD, NC -

The June event for the RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series may just be round 2 of 4 for the series, but for Aiden Baker Crouse and David Kalb Jr, this past weekends edition of the Kart City Performance Nationals at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina appeared more of a knockout punch in a battle of the best 4 Cycle Heavyweights in the country, as the 2 drivers combined for 9 wins over the weekend.IMG 1840

Success for both drivers began Friday afternoon in the Sportsman and Junior Pro Gas Shootout races. With $200 on the line for 1st place, courtesy of Brads Heating and Cooling, the 10-lap sprint race became a ton more interesting for drivers and fans. Crouse drew first blood on Friday, taking the 10 lap Sportsman Pro Gas Shootout over Riley Kelley and Cale Hall, thus claiming the $200 top prize. Kelley earned $100 for second with Hall netting $50 for third, while the entire top five, which consisted of Andrew Willis and Macon Moore, all received trophies for their efforts. For Crouse, it would be the 1st of 6 wins over the weekend, bringing his 2015 win total to 10 wins in 2 weekends!!!!

The Junior Pro Gas Shootout turned into a great battle with Kalb fending off the constant efforts of Cody Hall for the $200 victory, thus setting the tone for what would be a tough weekend for Kalbs competition. Hall claimed $100 for second, with Matthew Tortorell earning a solid 3rd, along with a $50 payday, a nice job considering the struggles he endured with handling issues during practice. The balance of the top 5 were Joshua Stark and Hunter Fox.

IMG 320421 karts lined up for the Senior Pro Gas Money race, rounding out the Friday on track activities. And for the second race in a row, Zach Linsell found himself not only taking the Money Race win, but again fending off the efforts of yet another Heavlow, this time Jimmy Heavlow. With younger brother Jake, the runnerup in Jacksonville, enjoying a graduation trip in the Dominican Republic, older brother Jimmy took behind the wheel, and thus made the battle a good one between the two northeast stalwarts. Linsells win netted just under $400 for the victory, with his win streak bringing back memories of the dominance of Gary Lawson in the Friday Night Shootout. Following the top 2 were Mike Greiner, Corey Towles, and Sean Meier.

As the series prepares for the Michigan Kart Supply Nationals July 3-5 at G and J Kartway in Camden, Ohio, Brad Farmer of Brad’s Heating and Cooling announced they will continue the Shootout Purses on Friday Night, with the Sportsman and Junior drivers again vying for $200 to win.

Following the Friday Night Awards Presentation, in which the 2014 Champions were honored, it was time to hit the track for Day #1 of the Kart City Performance Nationals.

The Tyler Sandmeyer LO206 Kid Kart Class was the first to hit the track Saturday with young Florida/Georgia product Owen Lloyd claiming his first career national event win. Lloyds win was not easy, as he had to fend off the efforts of defending series champion Jax Walker, as well as Brently Miller, the driver who swept both national races in Jacksonville. Bryce Sanders, making his first appearance of the year was 4th, with Caleb Gafrarar rounding out the top 5.

For Crouse, success began on Saturday in the Razor Chassis Sportsman Pro Gas Lite class. Saturdays main resembled that of the Friday night shootout with Riley Kelley again coming home second. Tanner Carter squeezed in for third, with Cale Hall and Macon Moore completing the top 5. Crouse was the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time Award Winner.IMG 3205

With second not being enough in Fridays Senior Pro Gas Money Race, Jimmy Heavlow roared back to take round 1 of the Coyote Motorsports sponsored Senior Pro Gas class, besting a talent laden field. Corey Towles chased Heavlow to the stripe with Mike Greiner again coming home in third, followed by Zach Linsell and Skyler Locklear, returning to the series after a brief absence.

Fighting flu like symptoms on a 90 degree South Carolina day, David Kalb Jr dug deep, shaking off the efforts of his illness, to lay claim to the Van K Wheels Junior Pro Gas Lite Class win, the second win in what would be a 3 win weekend. Chasing Kalb to the stripe were Matthew Miller, Cody Hall, Jimmy Cole Jackson, and Nash Dyun.

After taking 1 of 2 main events in Florida in March, Jim Lipari roared back to sweep both days of Animal Medium competition at Kershaw, topping Paul Headley and Cayla Chapman both days. Like Kalb, Chapman was suffering from high fever all weekend long.

After challenges at Jacksonville prevented a Top 3 finish, Riley Kelley, fresh off a second place run Friday in the Sportsman Pro Gas Shootout, bettered his position by 1 spot Saturday in the Miller Welders Sportsman LO206 Class, winning a great battle with Cale Hall and Tanner Carter to take the win for his first career Gold Cup National event win. Following the top 3 Saturday were Mark Steube and Elijah Skaggs.

In the Thor Oil Junior LO206 Class Saturday, Cody Hall carried his Jax momentum to Kershaw, claiming his second straight national event win, besting Hunter Fox, Jimmy Cole Jackson, Matthew Miller, and Jason Alder.

Alder rebounded on Sunday to finally lay claim to an event win at Kershaw. After scoring 4 national wins at Jacksonville, Alder struggled a good part of the weekend, but put it all together to claim Sundays win in the Junior LO206 Class. Alex Vrabel had a solid second place run, with Cody Hall, Jimmy Cole Jackson, and Talia Moffett completing the top 5.

IMG 3977Kershaw was somewhat like Old Home Week with the return of Skyler Locklear, Chris Wells, Jimmy Heavlow, Travis Manning, Ryan Bennett, AND Ben Wagenhals!! Jumping on to a Jim Lipari Coyote Chassis, Wagenhals returned to Gold Cup victory lane in fine fashion, taking the Briggs and Stratton Racing LO206 Heavy Final on Saturday. Austin Queen, the runnerup twice in Jacksonville, again stole the bridesmaid spot, with JT Swygert, Patrick O’Neal, and Matt Skaggs completing the top 5.

In a repeat performance of Sunday in Florida, Eric Fagan again took the Day 2 show, topping a great performance by Haley Kummer. Wagenhals came home third Sunday, with Swygert and Mike Greiner completing the top 5.

With time to rest between rounds, Crouse took back to the track to steal the Baker Racing Engines Sportsman Pro Gas Heavy  main over Riley Kelley, Andrew Willis, Mark Steube, and Macon Moore. Crouse also was the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time Award winner.

The Power Plus Lubricants Animal Heavy Mix Class found a new winner in Kershaw. After Paul Headley swept the action in Florida, Joey Miller found his way to victory circle for his first win of the year. Headley, the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time Award winner, was second, followed by Tim Stiefel, Josh Stiefel, and Case Hall.

The final event on Saturday was one David Kalb was looking for, as he laid claim to his second straight win of the day, and third of the weekend, taking the Brad’s Heating and Cooling Junior Pro Gas Heavy Main. Joshua Stark, continuing to get stronger every time out, was second, followed by Matthew Miller, Hunter Johnson, and Cody Hall.  Jason Alder was the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time Award winner.

As the series headed to another hot day on Sunday, new faces continued to find their way to victory lane as Bryce Sanders claimed his first career win in the Tyler Sandmeyer Kid Kart Class. And like Owen Lloyd on Saturday, Sanders had to hold off defending champ Jax Walker, as well as Brently Miller for the win. Sanders was the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time award winner for both Saturday and Sunday.

And as Sunday continued, so did Aiden Baker Crouse, sweeping the activities in the Razor Chassis Sportsman Pro Gas Lite class, edging out Riley Kelley, Tanner Carter, Cale Hall, and Andrew Willis. Crouse also swept the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time Awards in the class for the weekend.

The best race of the weekend, hands down, was the Coyote Motorsports Senior Pro Gas Lite main. Memories of Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison banging at Daytona paled in comparison to the side by side leaning, and sometimes equal banging, that Chris Wells and Jimmy Heavlow were performing, as the two drivers remained glued together around the course the entire final lap. As the pair exited the final turn, the pair remained side by side, with Wells gaining the inside advantage, forcing Heavlow slightly offline, and enough to score a huge victory in his comeback to the Gold Cup Series. The second the pair crossed the stripe, both drivers shook hands and high fived each other, recognizing an awesome driving performance by both. Sean Meier had the best seat in the house, watching the battle from his third finishing position, while Corey Towles and Skyler Locklear completed the top five. Towles was the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time winner.

Following a number of runs in the top 5 all weekend, Matthew Miller finally put it all together, taking the top honors in the Van K Wheels Junior Pro Gas Lite Main on Sunday, for his second win of the season, Miller, the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time winner, had won the Junior LO206 class at Jacksonville prior. Chasing Miller across the stripe were Alex Vrabel, Joshua Stark, Hunter Fox, and Hunter Johnson.

Crouse continued to spread the win wealth Sunday, taking the Miller Welders Sportsman LO206 class, topping Will Robusto, Cale Hall, Isabella Robusto, and Saturday winner Riley Kelley. Crouse was also the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time award winner.

Crouse completed the sweep of Sportsman Pro Gas competition, taking the Baker Racing Engines Heavy race on Sunday, beating out Riley Kelley, Mark Steube, and Andrew Willis. Crouse also collected another Mikim Motorsports Fast Time award for the day.

Enough was enough for Paul Headley in Sundays version of the Power Plus Lubricants Animal Heavy Mix Class. After 3 runnerup finishes for the weekend between Mix and Animal Medium, Headley broke out for his lone win of the weekend, topping Saturdays winner Joey Miller, with Dustin Demattia, Josh Steifel, and Tyler Smith completing the top 5. Smith was also the Mikim Motorsports Fast Time winner.

The final race of the weekend began in the same fashion the event began, with yet another new winner in victory lane in the form of Hunter Johnson, taking the Brad’s Heating and Cooling Junior Pro Gas Heavy Main. Johnson topped Mikim Motorsports Fast Time winner Matthew Miller, with Joshua Stark, Hunter Fox, and Matthew Tortorell completing the top 5.

With 2 of 4 national events in the books, the series now heads quickly to G and J Kartway in Camden, Ohio July 3-5 for the Michigan Kart Supply Nationals.

On behalf of the World Karting Association, a big thanks to the many competitors, families, and sponsors for supporting the event, and enduring a hot weekend, providing yet another wild weekend of racing on track.

CONCORD, NC - As part of the weekends festivities for the Kart City Performance Nationals this past weekend in Kershaw, South Carolina for the 2015 version of the RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series, champions from the 2014 season were honored at the Palmetto Club, as well as many other drivers for their awesome accomplishments through the season.

Leading the way in the champions category was Maryland driver Zach Wells, the recipient of 3 titles in 2014. Wells took top honors in the Thor Oil Junior Medium class, besting David Kalb Jr and Joshua Stark, the first of three visits to the front of the room for hardware. Wells also claimed the Brad’s Heating and Cooling Junior Heavy Mix class, with Stark and Kalb again his 2 staunchest rivals for the title. The trifecta for the young driver came in the Van K Wheels sponsored Junior Pro Gas Class, as Wells topped Connor Tebbe, Kalb, Dylan Murray, and Stark. In addition to the sets of Bridgestone tires for his championships, Wells also received a kart stand from RLV, a set of wheels from class sponsor Van K Wheels, his national eagle, and much more. While Wells could have taken his championship jackets and additional kart stands, he instead chose to trade them for a mammoth sized trophy, identical to the Manufacturers Championship Trophy, won this year by Paul Rice and MGM Chassis, and proceeded to list the victories on the trophy that paved the way for his 3 title performance.

IMG 2449For Rice, his acceptance of the Manufacturers Championship Trophy marked the second such award he has earned from 2014. The other award of this nature was a result of MGM’s major victory on the Vega Tire/TS Racing National Road Racing Series, ending a long run of dominance by Road Race chassis giant CKI. On the Gold Cup side, MGM came away with 22 wins on the season, followed closely by Coyote with 15 wins. Right on Coyote’s heels were Razor and Margay, both with 13 wins, while Bandit Chassis took 11 wins on the season.

As the focus turned back to the national classes, young Cody Hall was recognized for his dual championship performance in 2014, taking the Razor Chassis Sportsman Pro Gas Lite title over a stacked field including Matthew Miller, Jason Alder, Alex Vrabel, and Nick Fauci. Hall was also recognized for his title efforts in the Baker Racing Engines Sportsman Pro Gas Heavy class, again topping another very competitive field. Hall bested Jason Alder, Matthew Miller, Alex Vrabel, and Brian Van Cleve.

The first Senior class to be recognized was the Performance North Animal Modified Medium class where longtime campaigner Jim Lipari claimed the title over Paul Headley, Cayla Chapman, Tyler Sandmeyer, and Tanner Lee.

Jason Alder was next to be recognized for his championship efforts in the Miller Welders Sportsman Methanol class, edging out Matthew Miller and Riley Kelley, all 3 of which will be solid choices for 2015 titles after 2 national races this year.IMG 2459

The Coyote Motorsports Senior Pro Gas Animal class was next to be honored. Always sporting strong fields, numbers wise, as well as competition wise, Sean Meier came away with the top honors, topping former Junior driver Dustin Demattia, Tyler Sandmeyer, and Dylan Zobkiw.

The LO206 Kid Karts are gaining numbers momentum wise this season, following a great title run by Jax Walker 1 season ago to claim the title in the Kartcandy.com, Tyler Sandmeyer Racing sponsored class. Chasing Walker for the title were Blake Boon, Asher Johnson, and Jet Tobin.

While only 2 drivers were recognized in the Kart City Performance/Briggs and Stratton Racing LO206 Heavy class for 2014, the numbers for 2015 have well exceeded into double digits into the first 2 races of the new season. Taking the top honors for 2014 was Matt Skaggs, as he fended off Jordan Mincey.

IMG 2468The final class to be honored was the CKI/Power Plus Lubricants Animal Heavy Mix class where Paul Headley laid claim to the title. Tyler Sandmeyer, Patrick O’Neil, Tanner Lee, and Joshua Stiefel were the top 5 for 2014.

In addition to the champions and top 10 drivers being honored, several other special awards were presented.

Congratulations to the following individuals for their wonderful achievements in 2014.

Most Improved Senior Driver: Paul Headley

CONCORD, NC - Following an awesome turnout for the Ionic Edge Chassis Nationals in March in Jacksonville, Florida for the RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series, the momentum for the top 4 Cycle Sprint program in America now heads to Kershaw, South Carolina this weekend for the Kart City Performance Nationals!!!!

Welage and Zeen double up on Cheese Cows in Badger Spring Nationals!!!

Welage and Zeen double up on Cheese Cows in Badger Spring Nationals!!!

IMG_7464.jpg

CONCORD, NC - The return to Briggs and Stratton Raceway Park in Dousman, Wisconsin, the first for many since 2008, and the overall first for many completely, also meant a return to a time honored tradition. Stop #3  for the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup Series, albeit greeted by a steady day long rain on Saturday, was well rewarded with brilliant sunshine and great competition on Sunday with drivers in the top 5 not only receiving their just rewards, but the famed Cheese Cows, a symbolic award that sometimes has rivaled that of a Grand National Eagle!!!!

IMG 7464CONCORD, NC - The return to Briggs and Stratton Raceway Park in Dousman, Wisconsin, the first for many since 2008, and the overall first for many completely, also meant a return to a time honored tradition.

After racing all day on wet weather tires Saturday through qualifying and 3 sets of heat races, competitors quickly had to revert back to the dry setup on Sunday, fortunately something they were accustomed to on Friday, giving the newcomers plenty of track time in both weather conditions.

IMG 7509Leading the way in the win column over the weekend were Jason Welage and Andrick Zeen, the only 2 drivers to double their victory lane fortunes in the Spring Nationals.  Welage came out of the blocks quick on Sunday, winning a ferocious battle with local product Kyle Thome and national competitor Connor Ferris in the IAME USA Swift Cup Class.  Thome led the field down to the start after taking the Streeter Super Stands Fast Time honors on Saturday, and appeared to have things well in hand as Welage, Ferris, Pauly Massimino, and Tyler Ferris battled throughout the top 5. As the race wore on, Welage began to close the gap and apply pressure, eventually taking the win on Sunday. Thome held on to second, with Connor Ferris, Tyler Ferris, and Massimino completing the top 5.

After missing race #2 at Go Pro Motorplex in Mooresville, North Carolina, Andrick Zeen roared back with a vengeance in Dousman, taking the Tillotson Pro X 30 Senior event. Zeens victory did not come easy as Derek Dignan, fresh off solid runs at Go Pro, hounded Zeen the entire way. In the end, Zeen held on for his first win of the season, thus collecting a cool $1,000 for his efforts. Dignan shadowed Zeen across the stripe for a $500 payday with Mick Gabrial winning a set of Bridgestone Tires for his third place effort. Alexander Kardashian, the Streeter Super Stands Fast Time winner was 4th with Emily Hurlburt completing the top 5. During his podium interview, a very heavy hearted Zeen dedicated his win to his very close friend Philip Savapoulous, who was tragically killed recently.

IMG 7435The battle in the Woltjer Racing Engines Yamaha Junior class was a weekend long battle between the Top Kart of John Paul Southern Jr and the Merlin ride of Brandon Lemke. After battling hard in the rain all day Saturday, the intensity continued on Sunday with Southern, the Streeter Super Stands Pole winner, edging out Lemke, a great battle between the # 3 and 4 drivers in the series standings.  Giovanni Bromante was also a huge factor in this event, taking the lead briefly, but having to settle for 3rd at the stripe. Sam Mayer and Maks Kowalski completed the top 5 with series points leader Zach Holden having to settle for a 9th place result.

One of the most exciting races of the weekend may have indeed come in the Comet Kart Sales Yamaha Sportsman race as local driver Aiden Harrington edged out Kyle Thome for his first career national event win. Thome, stout all weekend long, led the field down to the stripe after taking the Streeter Super Stands Fast Time award, and again edged away in the early going. Meanwhile, Harrington was involved a race long battle for second with Kyle Janssen. Just as it appeared Thome would be able to sneak away, Harrington shot by Janssen and set his sights on the leader, thus taking the lead, and edging out Thome at the line for a most popular win. Thome again had to settle for second, with Janssen, Jason Welage, and Tristan Farber completing the top 5. Points leader Pauly Massimino came home 9th in the event, thus tightening his battle with Welage up just a little more.

A familiar face returned to victory lane  in the Zero Error Racing Yamaha Senior Pipe class as TJ Koyen returned to Badger in a big way, taking the Streeter Super Stands pole award, then leading  Dakota Pesek to the checkers in the event. Koyen, a longtime top competitor in 2 cycle competition, and no stranger to success at Badger, scored his first Mfg Cup win of the season, with Pesek, points leader Derek Hughes, Kyle Gluth, and Danny Corcoran completing the top 5.

IMG 7532With 2 podiums already under his belt for the day, Jason Welage returned to victory lane one more time, this time claiming $500 in the DRT Racing Pro TaG Sportsman class. While win #1 was a tight battle, Welage made sure to distance himself from the field, getting around Streeter Super Stands pole winner Luca Mars early, then edging away for the $500 victory. Mars held on to second, earning $250 while Madison Campeau made a great charge back inside the top 5 for a well- deserved third place run, thus earning a set of Bridgestone Tires. Gage Rodgers came home 4th with Kaden Wharff rounding out the top 5. Points leader Pauly Massimino came home 7th in the event.

In the New Jersey Sprint Series Yamaha Rookie Class, Connor Churchill rolled to his first win of the season, taking top honors over Aiden Hinds and points leader Donald Whorton II in yet another race that produced a multitude of lead changes. Following the top 3 across the stripe were Zach Collins and Lucas Smalec. Nick Snell, the runner-up in the series points, was the Streeter Super Stands Fast Time award winner on Saturday.

After finishing second to Southern in the Yamaha Junior final, Brandon Lemke was bound and determined to take at least 1 victory away from the Spring Nationals, thus winning the Streeter Super Stands Pole Award, then running away and hiding for the top spot in the KartSport North America Pro IAME Junior Final. Once again, Giovanni Bromante was in the top 3 as well, taking a second place run, with Alex Bertagnoli, points leader Zach Holden, and Southern completing the top 5. For his efforts, Lemke took home a $500 payday while Bromante claimed $250 for his runner-up honors. Bertagnoli was the recipient of a set of Bridgestone Tires.

Competition in the CRP Racing Products Kid Kart Class was again stout all weekend long. While the focus through the first 2 events at Daytona and Go Pro had been squarely on points leader Adam Brickley and Caleb Gafrarar, race #3 would find even more parity as Benjamin Maier, the #7 driver in the series standings swiped the top spot for his 1st national event win of the season, also becoming the third different winner in as many events on the series. Gafrarar ran a steady race for second with Sofia D’Arrigo scoring a top five for the girls with a third place run. After spinning early in the event, Sam Corry roared back for an impressive 4th place run as Austin Olds completed the top 5. Points leader Adam Brickley, the Streeter Super Stands Pole Award winner, spun in the event, and spent the better part of the race playing catch-up. Unfortunately for the points leader, he could not make it back into the top 10. Sporting just a 5 point lead coming into the event over Gafrarar, the battle in July at New Castle Motorsports Park will be a good one between these two young drivers, as well as the rest of the field.IMG 7606

The final event of the weekend was the battle in the HYTORC of Texas Pro Leopard Senior class, where Andrick Zeen not only cashed in for his second national win of the weekend, he earned yet another $1,000 for his efforts. After winning the Streeter Super Stands Pole Award, Zeen again found himself in familiar territory, fending off the efforts of Derek Dignan in the days final event. Dignan brought home another second place finish, thus earning another $500, while Josh Hotz’s third place finish netted him a set of Bridgestone Tires. Scott Kopp and Kindra Hurlburt completed the top 5.

With stop #3 in the books, the next event for the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup Series will be July 17-19 at New Castle Motorsports Park in New Castle, Indiana for the McLaughlin Motorsports Nationals. Entry Blank info is now available online at the WKA website.

On behalf of the Badger Kart Club and the World Karting Association, our sincerest thanks to all of our competitors, families, and sponsors for their hard efforts in working through yet another partially rainy weekend. The wait for great Sunday weather was truly worth it. Congratulations to all winners and top five recipients.

CONCORD, NC - Thanks to the endorsement of the WKA Board of Trustees, American young talent Jagger Jones and Ryan Lewis will begin their European tour this week with their participation in the three-event CIK Karting Academy Trophy beginning at Zuera, Spain.  The two will represent the United States as team mates in the fifth running of the program, using identical spec equipment which highlights the talent of young drivers from around the world.  Selected from the a list of interested applicants, Jones and Lewis will participate in Round 1 in Spain, joining the CIK European Championship, where fellow Americans Gary Carlton and AJ Myers will be participating in their respective KZ Categories.

Jagger has been preparing for his International assault with valuable testing with multi-world champion Danilo Rossi, along with his regular racing programs in SKUSA and Challenge of the Americas.  With support from Mom & Dad, Traxxis, and Niche Road Wheels, the Arizona native is looking forward to race against drivers from other countries, and get a sense of the various competition in the International Arena.  Jones made his debut on the International scene last year when he finished tenth in a field of 105 in Mini Category at the 2014 Rok Cup International Final last October in Italy.

Ryan spent his time from his Texas home studying the Zuera track online, along with input from the GP Factory Team who has time at the Spanish facility.  His experience in both Shifter and TAG categories participating in SKUSA regional and national events, gives him a bit of an edge, he feels, to quickly adapt to International circuits.  With some coaching input from IndyCar and Karting stand out Jay Howard, and support from his Family and Grandmother, Lewis wants to use his time in Spain to learn the various driving styles of his competitors and walk away knowing he is capable of beating drivers from other parts of the world.

After the weekend’s opening round, the duo will take on the International field of 51-drivers again in July at Genk, Belgium for Round 2 of the CIK Karting Academy, then again in September for the third and final round at LeMans, France.  You can follow all the American’s progress at www.CIKFIA.com

CONCORD, NC - Following a 2-month hiatus, the RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series is prepared for their next 2 nationals within a month of each other. Before competitors make their way to G and J Kartway in Camden, Ohio July 4th weekend for the Michigan Kart Supply Nationals, there is quite a bit of unsettled business June 5-7 at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, South Carolina for the Kart City Performance Nationals.

While the Ionic Edge Chassis Nationals in March in Jacksonville, Florida is a distant memory for some, many competitors, multiple winners at that, have been begging for the chance to hit the track for race #2 on the series.

Leading the charge is Jason Alder, a 4-time winner in Jacksonville in the Van K Wheels Junior Pro Gas Lite and Heavy, winning 2 mains a day in these respective classes which run each day of the nationals. Several heavyweights will be looking to unseat Alder, including Nash Duyn, Joshua Stark, Brian Van Cleve, Matt Miller, David Kalb Jr, Alex Vrabel, and a host of others.

Meanwhile, the battle for supremacy in the Tyler Sandmeyer sponsored Kid Kart Class is just as tough in Gold Cup as it is in the Bridgestone/Mazda Manufacturers Cup Series, where Brently Miller is looking to maintain his batting average at 1000%. After sweeping the 2 days of action in Florida, Miller is set to fend off the likes of multiple series competitor Caleb Gafrarar, as well as Owen Lloyd, Jax Walker, Blake Boon, Asher Johnson, and many others.

In the Razor Chassis Sportsman Pro Gas Lite and Heavy classes, Aiden Baker Crouse was just 2 positions away from the weekend sweep in Jacksonville as well, claiming 3 of 4 events, with the only thorn in his side being that of Andrew Willis. Looking to challenge in Kershaw will be Tanner Carter, Riley Kelley, Mark Steube, and Cale Hall to name a few.

Competition in the senior ranks found slightly more parity with Paul Headley and Jim Lipari splitting the Animal Medium mains, with Cayla Chapman another strong contender for the top spot in a couple weeks.

Animal Heavy Mix found Headley sweeping the weekends action in Florida, as he looks to continue the string of success at Kershaw.

The Coyote Motorsports Senior Pro Gas and Miller Welders LO 206 Heavy ranks found the toughest competition on the senior side. However in the end, nobody could match the toughness of Jacob Heavlow in the Pro Gas ranks. The challenge at Kershaw will be stout with Sean Meier, Tyler Smith, Zachary Linsell, Matthew Travis, Dustin Demattia, Haley Kummer, Aren Smith, Matt Mayes and others already set to challenge for the top shelf of the podium.

LO 206 Senior was one of the few classes that avoided a weekend sweep of competition in Florida with Evan Cowen and Eric Fagan taking the wins. Right on their heels both days in the runnerup spot was Austin Queen, with Patrick O’Neal, Brandon Murzynski, Matt Skaggs, Ryan Taylor, and a ton of other competitors ready to do battle.

Activities for the Kart City Performance Nationals get underway with a full day of practice Friday June 5 beginning at 8:30am. Once practice concludes at 4:30pm, the day is just beginning as both the Sportsman and Junior Pro Gas classes will have a 10-lap shootout, with the winner of each race taking home $200. Second place will get $100, while $50 will be awarded to 3rd. Trophies will also be available to the top 5 finishers. Following the 2-shootout races, fans will stay glued to the fence, as the Senior Pro Gas drivers will hit the track for their Money Race. Drivers will draw for their initial starting spots, and will line up for their standing start. At the halfway point of the event, the leader will draw a pill to determine the inversion, with the second half of the race for all the marbles.

Following the Shootout and Money races, the 2014 National Champions will be recognized for their efforts in a special presentation at the Palmetto Club on the speedway property. A barbecue style dinner will be made available at $6 per ticket. Special Awards to be given out include:

Manufacturer’s Championship Trophy: Winning Chassis for 2014

Ann Kugler Award: Outstanding contribution by a female in the sport

Family of the Year

Sportsmanship Award

Most Improved Junior Driver

Most Improved Senior Driver

For reservations, contact Marie Borsuk at (704) 455-1606, extension 111.

Race weekend activities continue on Saturday and Sunday with a full slate of action starting at 8:30am both days.
