Round Three of the WKA Manufacturers Cup Moves to Charlotte Motor Speedway and Shifts to Final Weekend of July

Bridgestone ManCup Logo RED with Summit.jpg

“Two opportunities for drivers to race inside the confines of Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2020”

February 7, 2020 – Announced last week that the World Karting Association Manufacturers Cup event slated for April 17-19 would be held at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, series officials have confirmed a second event at the legendary facility. Moving their July date from New Castle Motorsports Park to Charlotte, WKA will make their second trip of the season to the completely rebuilt kart track inside the legendary facility, but on a different layout than the April event weekend.

“Working with Charlotte Motor Speedway, a longtime supporter in our WKA program has allowed us to bring two events to the Speedway a few months apart. A facility that was known to groom some of the best professional drivers of the current day, the track that is currently being rebuilt will provide our racers with one of the best karting and raciest layouts on the East Coast,” explained Kevin Williams. “The much-anticipated return to Charlotte is on the horizon, and we look forward to having them on the schedule for years to come.”

The third round of the WKA Manufacturers Cup, which is also the third and final round of the WKA Mid-Season Shootout, will now be held on July 24-26. At the conclusion of the event, WKA officials will award their ROK prize package that includes ROK the RIO and ROK Cup Superfinal invitations.

Williams added, “We are already in the process of solidifying discounted hotels and will have that information out to our teams and competitors shortly. In the meantime, follow the WKA social media pages as we continue to document the construction and provide more information as it becomes available.”

With the date and location change, the WKA Manufacturers Cup in July will remain the WKA Grand Nationals and the prestigious WKA Grand National Eagles will be awarded to all Grand National Champions.

In other news, WKA has extended its tier-one registration for the Orlando Kart Center event February 21-23, 2020 until midnight on Sunday, February 9. Registration costs will increase after that date. Online registration can be completed HERE. WKA Florida Winter Cup series information can be found HERE.

WKA PLANS TO RETURN TO CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY IN APRIL

Bridgestone ManCup Logo RED with Summit.jpg

“Manufacturers Cup event in April will be first official race in years”

January 30, 2020 – When the World Karting Association Manufacturers Cup program announced their 2020 schedule, the date set for April 17-19 was slated to be in Charlotte, North Carolina. While the planned facility and layout was a temporary circuit in the Concord area, WKA officials have confirmed the anticipated return to Charlotte Motor Speedway. Featuring a multi-configuration design including a similar challenging layout that brought world-class drivers to the North American Karting Championships in 1995, the karting track inside the iconic Speedway is anticipated to have a complete facelift from the ground up, including widening to thirty six feet at the narrowest point, prior to the Manufacturers Cup weekend in April.

“The staff at Charlotte Motor Speedway is committed to have the upper echelon of North American kart racers return to their facility as construction has already begun,” explained WKA President Kevin Williams. “The Charlotte kart track was the home for great racing and exciting wheel-to-wheel action but over time, the circuit deteriorated. With a plan to restore not only the race surface, but everything that goes into the preservation of that surface for years to come, we are pleased to announce that our second Manufacturers Cup event of the year will take place inside the Charlotte Motor Speedway and will be the first competitive event on the newly repaved surface.”

It is no secret that Charlotte Motor Speedway wanted to return to the national level karting scene. While teams can utilize both tented pit spaces and rent the NASCAR garages, the facility brings excitement to the sport.

20-01-30-wka-cms.jpeg

Williams continued, “I wouldn’t be surprised if several racers from the past come out of the woodwork to compete inside the confines of Charlotte Motor Speedway for old times’ sake. I think there are several past race winners and champions that would enjoy the smoother pavement rather than the bumps and curbing which made the track one of the toughest in all of karting. The restoration project brings some added pressure for us to perform as a series but also a great deal of excitement as we head to the second event of the season.”

Before returning to the Charlotte Motor Speedway, the WKA program will travel south to the Orlando Kart Center for the final event in the WKA Florida Winter Cup and the first round of the WKA Mid-Season Shootout. With WKA Florida Winter Cup Championships on the line that include ROK the RIO prize packages, the Orlando event will be the first round of the Mid-Season Shootout which features ROK Cup Superfinal tickets as well as ROK the RIO invites. “Cash prizes to be handed out during drivers meeting as WKA gives back to their customers”

June 6, 2019 – June 5, 2019 – With the much-anticipated World Karting Association (WKA) events in Charlotte, North Carolina over the June 21-23 weekend, series officials are sweetening the pot for Manufacturers Cup competitors that pre-enter for the Charlotte Karting Challenge. Beginning in Charlotte and continuing for the remainder of the 2019 season, WKA will award cash prizes at the weekend driver’s meeting to one lucky random draw winner.

"We realize there is a ton of sprint racing the weekends before our Charlotte Motor Speedway Karting Challenge event, compressing the racers' time restraints," stated WKA President Kevin Williams. "With the ROK Cup USA event last weekend, GoPro Karting Challenge this weekend in Mooresville, North Carolina, USPKS next weekend, then the WKA Charlotte event the following weekend, we wanted to give something back to the racers."

“I tested the track in the early planning stages,” stated Eric Jones of IAME East, who as also kicked in a $200 credit towards IAME products from IAME USA East. “I’m excited about the great, safe racing this new venue will produce for the karters.”

Program Overview

·       All WKA Manufacturers Cup pre-entries, beginning with the Charlotte event, and again at each Manufactures Cup event for the remainder of the 2019 season, will have their names entered into a random drawing if they meet the pre-entry deadline. One lucky winner will be awarded a cash prize at the weekend’s driver’s meeting.

Prize Overview

·       $500 cash prize when WKA Manufacturers Cup reaches 50 pre-entries

·       $750 cash prize when WKA Manufacturers Cup reaches 51 to 75 pre-entries

·       $1000 cash prize when WKA Manufacturers Cup reaches 76 to 100 pre-entries

·       $1250 cash prize when WKA Manufacturers Cup reaches 101 or more pre-entries

In a separate drawing, IAME East and Eric Jones have also donated a $200 IAME product credit that will be awarded during the driver’s meeting.

To launch the new program, and only for the Charlotte Motor Speedway Karting Challenge, late registration fees will be waived, however, to qualify for the drawing, pre-entries must be received into the WKA offices by Noon (EDT) time on Tuesday, June 11, 2019.

For drivers in the Carolinas or surrounding states that are waiting to see what the weather will be, look to build off momentum from upcoming races or just on the fence about coming to the event, the removal of the late fees will open the doors to several of these racers.

Williams added, “We are set for a one of a kind event that you won’t want to miss. Entries have steadily been coming into our offices and we are in the final stages of planning and preparation. Personally, I cannot wait to get to North Carolina and get the weekend started.”

Maxxis Speedway Dirt Series

With the first ever Speedway Dirt Race at the Dirt Track at CMS, careful consideration was needed for track design and track prep. Maxxis Tires and the WKA staff have brought on veteran dirt track manager Mackey Flood to prepare an awesome track.

With the added Charlotte event, the 2019 schedule will experience some changes as noted below. Huge thank you to Pitt Race Complex and Concept Haulers Motor Speedway for making room on their calendars for 2019, but the addition of the Charlotte venue will result in the Manufacturers Cup program having to cancel these event venues with hopes to return to these amazing facilities in the very near future.

Other exciting news from WKA is the confirmation that the Manufacturers Cup will return to Road America on the May 17-19 weekend. Huge credit is given to Badger Kart Club in helping secure the date and additionally, they have gracefully agreed to change their race date to the August 23-25 weekend.

Revised Final Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup 2019 Schedule:

·       Daytona Kartweek, Daytona International Speedway - December 27-30, 2018

·       GoPro Motorplex, Mooresville, NC - March 29-31, 2019

·       Road America Karting Motorplex, Elkhart Lake, WI - May 17-19, 2019

·       Charlotte Motor Speedway, Concord, NC - June 21-23, 2019

·       Badger Kart Club Wolf Paving Raceway, Dousman, WI - August 23-25, 2019

·       New Castle Motorsports Park, New Castle, IN - October 11-13, 2019**

**WKA Grand National Event

Other changes to the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup include a change to Motul 2T Kart Oil for all 2-cycle categories as it becomes the spec oil for the series.

Additionally, at the most recent Trustee Meeting, some changes were made to the 2019 Regulations to make participation more member-friendly, as recommended by the Manufacturers Cup Competition Committee. After sampling many of the members to discuss the program's two finals per event format for each class, the drops allowed for 2019 Manufacturers Cup have changed from two entire event drops to four daily drops.

Also, to assist Mini drivers with their transition to the Junior ranks, WKA has added the KA100 Junior category to allow drivers to gain more experience before they move to the popular IAME X30 Junior class. To further assist, WKA will allow drivers with the attained age of 11-years old to advance to KA100 Junior for 2019.
