Daytona Road Race Entry Blank Now Available

CONCORD, NC - With the 2016 season for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting just a few weeks old, World Karting Officials have been busy gearing up for the series most prolific race of the season, as competitors can now view the 2017 national classes and options for the 2017 edition of Daytona KartWeek at the World Center of Racing, Daytona International Speedway.

With a new season comes some changes, additions, and deletions of classes from the previous year, with 22 national classes being offered, 11 in Sprint, 11 in Laydown, with 4 Local Option classes that will be offered regularly, in addition to a few others that will be offered at specific venues.

National Laydown classes returning in 2017 include B Stock, Junior Enduro, Yamaha Sportsman Medium, Yamaha Sportsman Heavy, Yamaha Senior, 100cc Piston Port, 100cc Controlled, Formula 100, Formula 125, and Unlimited, with the addition of the new X30 Laydown class. This class will feature the IAME X30 Engine, and will be available to drivers 15 and older. With the exception of B Stock, Formula 125, and Yamaha Senior, all other laydown classes will run the Final 1/Final 2 format.

The majority of changes came on the Sprint side, where a streamlining of the 4 Cycle classes, in an effort to strengthen entries took place. Classes returning for 2017 are Junior Animal, Junior Sprint, Yamaha Sportsman Sprint, Yamaha Sprint, WKA Sprint, TaG Heavy, Stock Honda, and 125 Sprint Shifter. The Leopard Sprint class will also be returning, but under a new name, IAME Sprint, with the Stock Parilla Leopard and X30 engine packages available, as well as a specific weight for both engine packages. The class will be available for drivers 16 and older.

The Animal and Clone classes will take on a new look this year, with 1 class available per day for each engine package. Animal Lite, Medium, and Heavy will be condensed into an Animal 385 class, with the Clone LO206 Lite and Heavy classes also following the same path, running a Clone LO206 385 as well. One of the many issues was the number of classes, and finding enough of a gap between races for drivers running all these classes, virtually making for a Race Directors nightmare. Creating these two classes not only cuts down on multiple classes with small entries, but also provides officials the chance to fairly separate the 2 classes, affording a driver that runs both engine packages, but on the same chassis, the opportunity to have time to make the switch in plenty of time.

4 Non National Local Option classes will be made available in 2017, beginning with the Cadet Sportsman LO206 for drivers 8-12. For the 2nd straight year, the TaG Junior class will also be offered for drivers 13-16, with the newest additions this season being Junior LO206, for drivers 13-15, as well as a CIK/LO206 Local Option Class for drivers 15 and older.

Additionally, the Daytona event will offer Local Option opportunities for the following classes:

Animal Limited Modified

Open Sprint

Vintage Limited

Vintage Euro

Vintage USA

Pre Entry will open November 1st for Daytona KartWeek, with a 3-tiered system back in place again. Competitors will have from November 1st to Nov 25 to take advantage of the initial pre entry price of $100 per class, with the 2nd tier running from Nov 26 to December 14, at a cost of $120, with the At Track fees set at $140, same as last year. Entry Fees for the Cadet, Junior LO206, and CIK/LO206 will be set at $65.

Competitors wishing to purchase a garage, or rent an RV Spot at Lake Lloyd can contact Buddy Long at (704) 455-1606, ext. 112, or at buddy@worldkarting.com.

2017 National Road Race Schedule Coming Together

CONCORD, NC - With the latest edition of Daytona KartWeek well in sight, plans have been made for December and well beyond, for the 2017 edition of the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting.

Kicking the Road Race Series off traditionally at Daytona International Speedway Dec 28-30, the series will then head back to Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah, Georgia March 10-12 for stop #2 on the series, as well as the annual Year End Awards Presentation. If this past March was any indication, the Roebling event will again be well attended, both the race and awards presentation.

As June hits, the series heads back to Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia for a June 3rd and 4th show, with the Woodbridge Kart Club again hosting a 2-day event, but modifying the Saturday schedule, allowing for more practice time on track, with there not being a designated Friday Practice Day.

The high momentum will continue in July when the series makes a return to Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia following a 1-year hiatus for a repaving project that occurred this past July.

Following an overwhelmingly positive response from competitors at the season finale this year at Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia, the series will make a return to the Peach State facility, again running the same weekend as this past year, September 15-17 as the national champions will again be crowned.

3 solid events run by the respective Clubs in Southern and Woodbridge Kart Clubs, with world class facilities in Daytona and Atlanta as the bookend races, have competitors jazzed up about the 2017 season.

Here’s a look at the 2017 schedule:

Dec 27-30: Daytona International Speedway

March 10-12: Roebling Road Raceway

June 3, 4: Summit Point Motorsports Park

July 21-23: Virginia International Raceway

September 15-17: Atlanta Motorsports Park

WKA Salutes 2016 Road Race National Champions

CONCORD, NC- The battle for supremacy in the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series concluded for the 2016 recently at the Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia. And while the rain shortened event provided a perfect summation to the season, that didn’t sway the positive spirit, nor high intensity for all competitors on and off the track.

Leading the way in the title category was Matt Michel. After suffering through a horrific crash in December at Daytona, Michel roared back to life with a vengeance, taking the CKI sponsored Yamaha Sportsman Medium class by 148 tallies over David Lee, who in turn edged Amanda Holewski by just 2 points for the runner-up spot. Michel also conquered the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class, again edging Lee, with Bill Holder rounding out the top 3.

Michel wasn’t the only double titlist, as Stephen Wheatley, Louie Magiera, and Cole Peschang checked in for a pair of 2016 titles as well.

Wheatley’s double dip came in the Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Lite class, where he bested Rob Hindery by 55 points, with Blake Beattie, Ben Thomason, and David Clevenger rounding out the top 5. Wheatley also laid claim to the Animal Medium class, topping Quentin Hill, Robert Wimmer, Rob Garland Jr, and Zach Linsell.

For long time veteran Louie Magiera, the titles came for the New Englander in the Yamaha Sprint and WKA Sprint categories, while up and comer Cole Peschang from the Midwest took down the Junior Animal Lite and Heavy top honors.

Steve Gore came away with the top honors this season in the Kion/Linde Forklifts Yamaha Heavy class, besting David McCauley and Ryan Hatcher, while Lamar Hilliard claimed a title this season in the Foster 4J Ranch Yamaha Medium category, topping McCauley and Hatcher as well.

In The Agile Group Unlimited class, Jeff Standridge took the top honors for the year over Ron Miller and Darrin Cuthbertson, while Emmit Rodriguez was the champion in the West Texas Outlaws TaG Heavy division.

The WT Racing Leopard Sprint class again saw good competition this year with Robert Wimmer edging Jeff Troup, Donald Nelson, Quincy Smith, and Jesse Holt for the top honors.

Stephen Flatt joined the list of drivers celebrating a title this year, taking the Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda class, besting Steven Rougeou, Chris Hines, Aamir Hyder, and Keith Buffo.

In the KALL Racing/Millers Dynotime Racing Formula 100 class, Travis Miller won the battle over Lance Yunck, with Michael Tracy, Scott Campbell, and Rick Fulks completing the top 5.

And Bill Morsberger laid claim to the Matthai Material Handling 100cc Piston Port Class for the season, taking the title over John Brown.

Here’s a look at the remaining 2016 National Champions:

B Stock: Duane Eberhart

Yamaha Sportsman Sprint: Dawn Magiera

125 Sprint Shifter: Thomas Dupont

Clone LO206 Lite: Rob Hindery

Clone LO206 Heavy: Robert Garland Sr

Animal Heavy: Steve Johnson

On behalf of the World Karting Association, our sincerest congratulations to all the national champions, as well as all participants in the 2016 season.

Special thanks to Jim Russell Jr of Russell Karting Specialites, the entire list of sponsors for the year, as well as the Southern Kart Club, Woodbridge Kart Club, and the many officials who take time away from their personal lives to help make the Road Race program truly one of the best places to be on a weekend.

While the season will kick off, as always at Daytona for KartWeek, the annual awards presentation will be announced shortly.

Entry information for Daytona KartWeek will be out shortly.

Wheatley, Garland, and Fulks Families make Atlanta Grand National History

Wheatley, Garland, and Fulks Families make Atlanta Grand National History

CONCORD, NC- The inaugural appearance of World Karting Association at the ultra-modern Atlanta Motorsports Park for the series Grand National event found some monumental results in the season finale for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting.

Nestled in the small southern town of Dawsonville, Georgia, home to legendary Nascar Sprint Cup star Bill Elliott, as well as son Chase, who is running for Sprint Cup Rookie of the Year honors, the element of family was extended through the karting ranks, as competitors absolutely fell in love with the 2-mile course, which offers some of the most demanding hill climbs, with elevation changes of 86 feet within the 2-mile distance.

At the end of Day 1, winners of Grand National Eagles included the Father/Daughter duo of Stephen and Madison Wheatley, as well as a Father/Son combination of Robert and Rob Garland, not to mention a brother tandem of Randy and Rick Fulks. Not to be forgotten was Ryan Hatcher, the ONLY driver to secure 2 wins on Saturday.

The stories of some of these families was so wonderfully intertwined, with Randy Fulks taking the hotly contested 100cc Controlled win over bother Rick, with Joe Scavusso, Johnny Scavusso, and Lance Yunck completing the top 5. Well known for scores of wins and titles, not to mention a great personality, the Illinois Hall of Famer honored Cadet winner Madison Wheatley by giving her his race winning eagle, as Wheatley, a Local Option top dog in the Cadet Class, received a plaque for her winning efforts, thus sending the momentum of the weekend through the roof.

Fulks brother Rick, not to be denied the top shelf of the podium, took top honors in the KALL Racing Formula 100 class, topping Lance Yunck, Joe Scavusso, John Ellsworth, and Sean O’Shea.

For Stephen Wheatley, the weekend was complete with not only enjoying the success of his daughter Madison, but also securing the Animal Medium top honors on Saturday as well.

The final family duo found Robert Garland taking the Clone LO206 Heavy class, edging Wesley Thomason, Steve Johnson, and James Cartledge, while Rob Jr was the big winner in the Animal Heavy ranks, topping Steve Johnson.

As mentioned earlier, Ryan Hatcher was the only repeat winner of the day, first taking the CKI Yamaha Sportsman Medium class, besting Matt Michel, Tim Linthicum, Amanda Holewski, and David Lee.. Hatcher’s second win came later in the day in the Foster 4J Ranch Yamaha Medium Class, as he topped Lamar Hilliard and John Brown.

Michel’s second place run in the Yamaha Sportsman Medium class was as close as anyone else would get to 2 wins, as Michel took the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy Class over David Lee.

In other action, Blake Beattie topped Rob Hindery, Ben Thomason, and Stephen Wheatley in the Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Lite class, while Stephen Basham took down the field in the WT Racing Leopard Sprint class, topping Donald Nelson, Curtis Lee, Scott Taylor, and Jesse Holt.

Brian Fisher was the big winner in the Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda class, besting Stephen Flatt, Ben Everhart, David Harding, and Aamir Hyder, while Jamey Brown was the top dog in the West Texas Outlaws TaG Heavy class, topping Jean Brown, Emmitt Rodriguez, and Gary Sircy.  John Brown took the Matthai Material Handling 100cc Piston Port Class.

Day 2 activities were drowned out by Mother Nature. And while WKA changed their policy where competitors can run in the rain in Road Race, ultimately the call is at the discretion of the Race Director. Heavy rain left considerable ponding in critical areas of the track, forcing the decision to scrub the Day 2 activities.

Here’s a look at some of the other weekend winners:

Cadet Local Option: Madison Wheatley

Clone LO206 Lite: James Cartledge

Vintage Limited Local Option: Robby Harper

WKA Sprint: Louie Magiera

Yamaha Sportsman Sprint: Dan Febboriello

Junior Enduro: Taylor Collins

Junior Animal Lite: Cole Peschang

Yamaha Sprint: Anthony Stiffler

B Stock: Allen Cox

Formula 125: Brian Wilhelm

Animal Limited Modified Local Option: Charles Wilbur

The final weekend of racing also secured yet another Manufacturers Championship Trophy for John and Wendy Klutz and the entire CKI staff, with an unofficial total of 41 victories this year in the 4 race program for Competition Karting Incorporated.

The next event for the Road Race program will be the annual return to Daytona International Speedway December 27-30 for Daytona KartWeek, with the Year End Awards Presentation slated for March, the same weekend as the Roebling Road National. That date, as well as the balance of the 2017 National Road Race Schedule is in the process of being finalized, and should be out shortly.

The 2017 Class Structure will be announced shortly as well.

Anyone wishing to reserve a garage for Daytona may contact Buddy Long at (704) 455-1606, ext 112, or buddy@worldkarting.com.

On behalf of the World Karting Association, our sincerest thanks to all the competitors, sponsors, tracks, officials, families, and so many others for helping to put a great exclamation point on the 2016 season. We wish you all a safe and happy holiday season, and look forward to seeing you at Daytona in December!!!!

Atlanta Grand National for Road Race Series Getting Close

Atlanta Grand National for Road Race Series Getting Close

CONCORD, NC - The final exclamation point to what has been one of the more interesting seasons for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting is nearing, as competitors prepare for the season ending Grand National event at the Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia September 16-18.

With the season shortened to 4 races, and the June Summit Point event serving as the most recent event for the series, drivers are eager to tackle the 2 mile Atlanta layout, featuring 86 feet of elevation changes.

Drivers that have run the previous 3 races this season will be awarded 50 Bonus Points for running all 4 National Events this year. Additionally, 6 of 8 races in the Final 1/Final 2 classes are being counted this year in order to be eligible for year-end awards recognition and a shot at a national championship.

Entries are rolling in at a rapid pace, with the event expected to hit very large numbers. Activities for the Grand National event will get underway with parking slated for Thursday Sept 15 from 3-7pm. Pre Entry Pickup for the event that day will run from 4-6pm.

On Friday, the track will go hot with practice from 9am-4pm. Saturday and Sunday activities will get underway each day with the first race hitting the track at 9am for Group Practice, followed by the days first events.

07.20.2016 - Atlanta Road Race GN Entry Blank Now Available, Daytona to start 2017 Season

rr_logo.2016-1-e1452911070168.png

CONCORD, NC - The Entry Blank for the Grand National event for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting is now available on the WKA website. The series will be heading to Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia for the first time ever September 16-18, battling for Grand National Eagles, as well as 50 Bonus points for running all 4 of the national events this season.

With the unfortunate cancellation of the July Dominion Raceway event, combined with the challenge of rescheduling another national event in suitable time for competitors, as well as being respectful to the late season regional events and other races scheduled, World Karting Officials felt it was in the best interest of the series, given the circumstances, to settle for a 4 race national program, and come back out in 2017 loaded for bear.

With the decision to go with the 4 race national program, competitors will follow the same format with 4 races as they would have with 5, meaning there is still 1 drop in the program, with drivers running all 4 events earning 50 Bonus Points.

While the challenges of the schedule for 2016 have been trying to say the least, given the repaving project at VIR, as well as the Dominion cancellation, WKA is coming out of the gates in 2017 with a vengeance, beginning with the latest edition of Daytona Kart Week, bringing the Road Race, Mfg Cup, and Speedway Dirt Series drivers back for the annual December Holiday Classic Dec 27-30. More information on the Daytona event will be coming in the next several weeks, as World Karting Officials are also placing the finishing touches on a return to the Midwest in 2017 as well.

06.15.2016 - Clark Family Enjoys Success at Summit Point

rr_logo.2016-1-e1452911070168.png

CONCORD, NC - The history and tradition of Summit Point Motorsports Park extends well beyond that of motorsports. The surrounding area, which can place a person in West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland in a matter of a few minutes in any direction, is also abundant in historical landmarks, including that of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. And while thoughts of Harpers Ferry typically create memories of water falls, rolling rapids, railroads, and historical buildings, it’s also rich in racing tradition with the likes of Scott and Zack Clark. The father/son combination rolled the karts out of their Harpers Ferry shop, promptly parking them in victory lane Four TImes during the Summit Point Nationals for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series Presented by Russell Karting.

The duo, led by Scott, provided the first One/Two punch with the winning efforts in the CKI Yamaha Sportsman Medium Final on Saturday, besting Matt Michel, Tim Linthicum, and Scott Stauffer. The dup returned on Sunday for the same class and same effort, topping Michel once again, with Simon Whitnell and Joe Kennedy rounding out the top 5. The duo were almost letter perfect in their respective classes all weekend with Scott and Zack serving up another top 2 finish in the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class on Saturday, with Scott taking the 4 race sweep on Sunday, while Zack finished 6th in the final race. Michel, Bill Holder, and Joe Dempsey were the top 5 Saturday in the first final, with Michel finally able to get to second in the Heavy Finale, while Linthicum, Holder, and Whitnell completed the top 5.

AJ Ellis from Ellicott City, Maryland was also another big winner over the weekend at Summit, taking wins in Leopard and WKA Sprint. Ellis’s first win in the WKA Sprint class on Saturday came over John Jezierski, Louie Magiera, James Leins, and JC Sanders. On Sunday, Ellis came back for the win in the WT Racing Leopard Sprint class, taking down Joseph Barron, Robert Wimmer, Scott Taylor, and Travis Waddell.

Robert Garland made the haul from Darlington, South Carolina memorable by taking down 3 wins over the weekend, including a sweep of the Clone LO206 Heavy class, while also scoring a win in the Animal Heavy class on Sunday, topping William Lewis, Rob Garland, Steve Johnson, and Ethan Beasom.

Rob Hindery from Port Orange, Florida, a runner-up to Garland in the Clone Heavy class, found his way to victory lane as well, taking the Clone LO206 Lite class on Saturday, then taking top honors in the Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Lite class on Sunday, topping Leon Austin Hodges and David Clevenger.

Other multiple winners included Taylor Farr of Roseville, Michigan with a sweep of the Junior Enduro Finals both days. And Travis Miller of Virginia Beach, Virginia scored duel wins in the Formula 100 Finals sponsored by KALL Racing and Millers Dynotime Racing. The always steady Louie Magiera took twins in the Yamaha Sprint category, while Donald Santini swept the 125 Shifter class, and Gary Sircy took both TaG Heavy finals.

06.01.2016 - Dominion Raceway Progressing Nicely

rr_logo.2016-1-e1452911070168.png

CONCORD, NC - When the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting enters the all new Dominion Raceway in Thornburg, Virginia for their national event July 29-31, competitors will be witness to the culmination of years of planning, and months of construction. On several different occasions since January, WKA and WKC Officials have visited the multipurpose facility, which currently features a .4 mile paved NASCAR oval, most recently host to a most successful NASCAR K and N Pro Series East race Memorial Day weekend, as well as a 2 mile, 12 turn Road Course, featuring 70 feet of elevation changes and a 2700 foot fronstretch. Since the May 6 visit, the track has been hammered by 18 days of wet weather. However, upon return to the facility May 27, an immense amount of work had been done, despite the ominous weather. Complete since the last visit is a fully paved paddock and pit road area, complete with a number of power sources for customers. The 2 major areas that are currently being worked on include moving the fronstretch wall into its permanent position, thus separating the straightaway from the eighth mile drag strip that is also currently under construction.

Guardrail is also being installed in a key area of the track, protecting competitors from the drop-off created by a permanent drainage ditch. The guardrail will be installed, with the bottom wall of protection sitting on the ground, preventing competitors from driving under it. Other protective barriers will be placed in front of the guardrail as well, providing for an even safer experience in the turn 7 section of the 12 turn course.

An illustrious 3 story tower has also been constructed, providing a bird’s eye view for timing and scoring, as well as Race Control, giving officials a complete view of the 2-mile course.

The next couple weeks will see a huge impact on the above mentioned areas, as well as the finishing touches on other parts of the course.

Information regarding the karting event will be online shortly, with the finishing touches being put on the entry blank for the July event.

For more information on the Dominion Raceway Course, visit www.dominionraceway.com.

CONCORD, NC - With 2 races in the books for the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting in the books, the series sets its focus on the Summit Point Nationals, the next major event on the WKA calendar June 4 and 5 at Summit Point Motorsports Park in West Virginia. Following the exciting events at Daytona and Roebling Road, Competition Karting Incorporated has again taken its place atop the leader board in the chassis standings for yet another season, posting 28 wins in the first two events of the year. And after just relocating their shop a week or so ago, CKI looks to maintain that momentum at Summit in a little over a month. MGM Chassis is currently second in the standings with 6 wins this year, followed closely by Hatcher with 4 wins, while Margay and DRT have 3 wins apiece. Owl, Velocity, Cosmic, Arrow, and Dominator have 2 wins to their credit this season, while single event wins belong to Intrepid, Phantom, Dragon, PRD, Elite, Cyclone, Coyote, Corsa, and PVP.

In the national standings, Lance Yunck holds a commanding lead over Michael Tracy in the 100cc Controlled class, while William Morsberger has quite a substantial lead over Anthony Vaccaro in the Matthai Material Handling 100cc Piston Port Class. Duane Eberharts win at Roebling Road has placed him atop the standings in the B Stock Class, holding a 35 point lead over Benjamin Eberhart.

Cole Peschang holds the lead in the Junior Animal Lite standings, while Stephen Wheatley leads Blake Beattie in the Hoosier Racing Tire Animal Lite class. Wheatley also currently holds down the top spot in the Animal Medium division, while Steve Johnson has the edge over Robert Garland in the Animal Heavy class.

In Clone competition, Blake Beattie holds the edge over Rob Hindery in the Clone LO206 Lite category, while Robert Garland is currently atop the Clone LO206 Heavy standings.

Travis Miller heads to Summit Point with a 90 point edge over Lance Yunck in the Formula 100 class, sponsored by Millers Dynotime Racing and KALL Racing, while Brian Wilhelm holds a slim 4 point edge over Robby Harper in the Formula 125 class, one of the tightest battles in the series.

Thomas Dupont leaves Roebling Road with a healthy lead over James Crawford in the 125 Sprint Shifter class, while the battle in the Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda class is a tight one, with Steven Rougeou holding a 5 point edge over Stephen Flatt.

Quincy Smith leads Walter Troup by a mere 10 points in the WT Racing Leopard Sprint class, with David Benham leading Emmit Rodriguez by 33 points in the West Texas Outlaws TaG Heavy category.

The battle in The Agile Group sponsored Unlimited class is also a tight one with Jeff Standridge holding a slim 13 point edge over Ron Miller, while John Jazierski has a little bit of cushion over Louie Magiera in the WKA Sprint class.

The Magiera family is well represented up top in the Yamaha Sportsman and Yamaha Sprint Classes class with Dawn Magiera holding a commanding lead over Dan Febbroriello in the Sportsman category, while Louie has a huge lead over Dennis Cole in the Sprint class.

Ryan Hatcher leads the Foster 4J Ranch Yamaha Medium class by just 10 points over Lamar Hilliard, with David McCauley holding a commanding lead over Hatcher in the Yamaha Heavy class.

In the CKI Yamaha Sportsman class, Matt Michel and David Lee are involved in a tight battle, with Michel holding a 15 point margin for the lead, while also leading Lee in the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class.

The battles will continue at Summit in a few weeks as the quest for respective titles will heat up during the summer months.

03.30.2016 - Michel Recovers Nicely for 4 Win Roebling Weekend

rr_logo.2016-1-e1452911070168.png

CONCORD, NC - The first two races of the new season for Matt Michel on the Dunlop/Xeramic National Road Race Series presented by Russell Karting could not have been any more different if you scripted it. After sustaining serious injuries in a turn 3 crash on the high banks of Daytona, leaving the young driver with several broken ribs and many other injuries, Michel stormed back for stop #2 on the series to claim 4 wins recently at Roebling Road Raceway in Savannah, Georgia in front of improving series numbers, numbers the Southern Kart Club had not seen in a while, and a sign that the health of the Road Race program, much like that of Michel, is steadily improving with each passing race. The multiple win weekend was not just confined to Michel though, as veteran Louie Magiera continues to pick em up and lay em down, scoring 4 wins as well. Other multiple winners at Roebling included Stephen Wheatley, Robert Wimmer, William Morsberger, Travis Miller, Dawn Magiera, Duane Eberhart, and Steve Johnson.

Additionally, the participation of 7 Cadet Class drivers was also a welcome sign for the program, searching for an injection of youth to carry on the fabled Road Race tradition. Madison Wheatley was the big winner of the weekend, not only taking $100 at the awards banquet Friday evening, but maintaining her momentum on track, taking both wins on the weekend. Wheatley bested Jordan Johnson, Carter Hadden, JB Dixon, and Palmer Roberson for the top 5, with Katie and Desi Greco completing the field on Day 1.

Wheatley was trailed by Dixon on Day 2, with Hadden, Johnson, and Roberson completing the top 5. Desi and Katie Greco completed the impressive field of Cadet competitors.

The first of Robert Wimmers 3 wins on the weekend came Saturday in the WT Racing Leopard Sprint class, where Wimmer bested Walter Troup, Quincy Smith, AJ Ellis, and Don Johnson. Wimmer also took the Animal Medium final on Day 1, topping Quentin Hall and Stephen Wheatley. Wimmer returned on Sunday to sweep the Leopard Sprint class, topping Smith and Troup.

For Wheatley, his weekend started with the Hoosier Racing Tires Animal Lite class, fending off the efforts of Rob Hindery, David Clevenger, Ben Thomason and Blake Beattie. Wheatley came back Sunday to complete the feat in the class, topping Thomason, Beattie, Clevenger, and Hindery.

Steve Johnson’s 2 wins for the weekend came in the Animal Heavy Class while Duane Eberhart took the first of his 3 wins in the B Stock class over Ben Eberhart, Johnny Scavuzzo, Joe Scavuzzo, and Brandon Nichols. Eberhart also won both Vintage races for the weekend as well.

2015 champions Chris Hines and Steven Rougeou split the wins over the weekend in the Fisher Racing Engines Stock Honda Class. Hines took Day 1 over Stephen Flatt, Rougeou, Aamir Hyder, and Keith Buffo, while Rougeou took the Sunday matinee over Flatt, Hyder, Buffo, and Michael Hines, with Chris Hines finishing sixth on Day 2.

Travis Miller laid claim to the KALL Racing Formula 100 class on Saturday, taking down Milo Schoonover, Rick Fulks, Paul Wyzga, and Lance Yunck, while the Millers Dynotime sponsored class on Sunday again saw Miller taking the win, this time over Yunck, with Wyzga and Michael Tracy completing the running order.

For Matt Michel, the sweet taste of victory came Friday evening, with the induction of his father Pete into the World Karting Hall of Fame at the series annual awards presentation. With several family members in attendance, it clearly was an emotional time for the Michel Family. That emotion and momentum carried over to Saturday where Michel recorded the first of his four wins on the weekend, taking the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class, topping Brandon Schenkel, Bill Holder, David Lee, and David Stolte. Michel polished Saturday off with a win in the CKI sponsored Yamaha Sportsman Medium class, following a spirited duel with Bill Holder. Amanda Holewski came home third on Day 1, with David Lee and Ace Rossi completing the top 5. To make the weekend perfect, Michel roared back to sweep both classes Sunday, topping Stolte, Lee, Norris, and Jimmy Driggers in the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy class, while Amanda Holewski chased Michel across the stripe in the Yamaha Sportsman Medium class, followed by David Lee and Michael Marr.

As mentioned earlier, the only driver to match Michel on weekend win totals was Louie Magiera, taking the WKA Sprint win Saturday over John Jezierski, Richard Russell, and Ryan Goetzman. Magiera came back Sunday to win WKA Sprint again, topping Goetzman and Jezierski. Magiera also swept the Yamaha Sprint mains for the weekend as well.

Good fortunes stayed in the Magiera family in the form of Dawn Magiera, Louie’s wife, as Dawn won the Yamaha Sportsman Sprint race, besting Dan Febbroriello, Lee Curtis, and Mandy Doles on Day 1, with Febbroriello, Doles, and Curtis chasing Magiera to the stripe on Sunday.

Bill Morsberger swept the Matthai Material Handling 100cc Piston Port Class to finish out the weekends multiple winners. Here’s a look at the rest of the weekends top finishers.

03.14.2016 - 2015 Road Race Year End Awards Presentation a Huge Success

03.14.2016 - 2015 Road Race Year End Awards Presentation a Huge Success

rr_logo.2016-1-e1452911070168.png

CONCORD, NC - Competitors for the WKA National Road Race Series took time out of their busy weekend racing schedule this past Friday evening in Bloomingdale, Georgia to partake in the annual awards presentation, honoring the 2015 national champions, as well as many other worthy recipients from the most recent years national events. Taking place at the Bloomingdale Community Center, just a few short miles from Roebling Road Raceway, site of the second major event for the 2016 Road Race program, guests kicked back to music and great food provided by Pure Vinyl Entertainment and Barnes Restaurant, 2 local establishments.

While the evening was all about the champions, this night belonged to longtime Road Race competitor, Dad, and enthusiast Pete Michel, who became the latest inductee into the World Karting Hall of Fame. Joined by several members of his family who flew in for the function, Michel, totally oblivious to the impending award, drew a roaring applause and standing ovation from the packed house on hand. Starting racing at the age of 9, Michel won the World Championship in 1960 in Nassau, Bahamas, owned and operated a kart shop and track from 1965-1983, was the C Open National Champion in 1971 and 72, and continues to this day to build engines and karts, all while helping his son Matt, another recipient of a national championship this past season in the Yamaha Sportsman Heavy Class.

Joining Michel in the popularity category for the night were Rob Hindery and his Dad, recipients of the Karting Family of the Year Award, yet another popular choice to the guests in attendance. Hindery was on hand to receive his 4th place award in the Animal 360 Class, a title taken by David Clevenger this past season.

After missing out on the Manufacturers Championship Trophy last season to MGM, John Klutz and the gang from Competition Karting Incorporated returned to the top of the heap with a vengeance, taking 51 victories in 2015 with the CKI Chassis, outdistancing the competition by some 18 wins, returning to the top of the podium for yet another year.

Also on hand for a special award was Tim Linthicum. While taking home the hardware in the Yamaha Sportsman Lite and CKI sponsored Yamaha Medium Classes, Linthicum was also recognized for his sportsmanship at Daytona, by stopping on the track on the final lap of his event, an event he was leading, to check on the status of fellow driver Matt Michel, who was involved in a grinding crash in turn 3. Michel sustained several broken ribs, among other injuries, and has recovered fully. Linthicum, by virtue of his race status at the time, was well ahead in the event, and won the race. But his actions on that day displayed the true passion and love the Road Race Family has for one another.

Linthicum was not the only dual winner of titles in 2015, as several other drivers were honored for their double championship efforts, including Abigail Tobin in the Animal Junior Sprint Lite and Heavy Classes, as well as fellow drivers Chris Hines, taking the Stock Honda 1 and 2 Classes, Amy Hollowell, 2 time champ in Junior Sprint Lite and Heavy, as well as Kent Vaccaro, champion in the Junior Enduro Lite and Heavy Classes. Veteran Louie Magiera also laid claim to a pair of titles, taking down the Yamaha Sprint and Sportsman Sprint categories.

Other champions included Michael Tracy in The Agile Group sponsored 100cc Controlled class, while Travis Miller took down the KALL Racing/Millers Dynotime Racing Formula 100 class. Ian Bushey was the top dog this season in the Streeter Super Stands Stock Leopard class, while Bill Anderson took the Matthai Material Handling Yamaha Heavy class. Here’s a look at the rest of the 2015 Champions.

100cc Controlled: Adam Myers

100cc Pipe Heavy: Anthony Vaccaro

B Stock: Robby Harper

Animal Masters 410: Robert Garland

Animal 385: Blake Beattie

Pro Gas Animal: Stephen Wheatley

Clone LO206 360: Ben Thomason

Clone LO206 385: James Cartledge

125 Shifter: Donald Santini

WKA Sprint: AJ Ellis

On behalf of the World Karting Association, our sincerest congratulations to all of the 2015 champions, as well as recipients of the Year End Awards Ceremony. The high energy in the room was a clear indication that competitors are realizing the WKA Road Race program is on its way back with good leadership and solid people now in place that truly cared about each and everyone in the room that night, as well as those that weren’t in attendance. Stronger than usual numbers for the second race at Roebling Road was also a good indicator that the road back is getting smoother.  WKA salutes the 2015 champions of the National Road Race Series.
