CONCORD, NC - The second round of the inaugural WKA Winter Cup Program could not have been labeled more precisely, as bone chilling temperatures, accompanied by occasional rain, challenged the efforts of driver and crew all weekend at 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida. However, the end result was a success witnessed by the large crowd of spectators in attendance. The February Winter Cup also marked the return of 2 Cycle racing to Jacksonville under the WKA umbrella for the first time in many years. With 103rd Street serving for many years as THE Stop for 2 cycle racers back in the day during Daytona KartWeek, the eventual construction of a sprint track in the infield at Daytona International Speedway, enabled all three parts of the Daytona KartWeek puzzle to fit in together in one place, thus ending a long run down the 1,000 foot backstretch for quite a while.

The February return to 103rd brought back memories for many in the 2-cycle world. And when the dust settled, a driver who was oblivious to racing at Jax the last time 2 cycles were there, ended up on the top shelf of the podium twice for the weekend, as Jason Welage scored the overall wins in the Allison Racing Engines Yamaha Sportsman class, as well as the IAME USA East Pro Swift Sportsman categories.

Other overall winners for the weekend included Jason Yarbrough, leading again another very strong contingent of Briggs & Stratton LO206 Senior class competition, Brent Crews in the CRPRACING.COM Mini Swift class, and Lance Fenderson the top dog in the Woltjer Racing Engines Pro IAME Junior class. Bradon Eves took top honors for the weekend in the KARTSPORT North America Pro IAME Senior division, while Karsyn Walters took the top spot on the podium in the Water for a Cause Kid Kart class. And Jimmy Cole Jackson topped all comers in the Briggs & Stratton LO206 Junior class.

For Welage, consistency would be the name of the game on Day 1, as the 3 time Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup Champion from 2015 would shadow Kaden Wharff across the stripe in the Yamaha Sportsman Class. For Wharff, as well as anyone else that became acquainted with the 1,000 foot backstretch at 103rd Street, being in the right place on the right lap is everything, especially in Jacksonville, as Wharff laid claim to the win. The top 2 were chased across the stripe by Annie Rhule, Eli Trull, and Rylee Engel for the top 5, with Welage taking the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time Award.

Welage would again find second as the spot in the IAME USA East Pro Swift Sportsman Class as Connor Ferris took the victory on Saturday, with Robert Noaker III, Annie Rhule, and Ashton Chilton completing the top 5. Welage again would be the recipient of the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time Award.

In other Saturday action, Brent Crews fended off the efforts of Sebastian Ng for the win in the CRPRACING.COM Mini Swift class. Caleb Gafrarar rode home third on Day 1, with Danny Dyszelski and Nicholas Terlecki completing the top 5. Eli Trull, the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time winner, rode home 6th.

For the second race in a row, the Allison Racing Engines Pro IAME Junior class did not disappoint, as Lance Fenderson turned back the efforts of Ty Gibbs for the win. Fenderson was also the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time winner. Chasing the top 2 across the line were Vincenzo Sarracino, Alex Bertagnoli, and Pauley Massimino.

Coming to Jacksonville, many in attendance in the Briggs & Stratton Racing LO206 Senior class knew Corey Towles would be tough to fend off, following a stellar Daytona performance. But Jason Yarbrough was one of those who dug in the trenches a little deeper, and was able to secure the Day 1 win over Towles, with Michael Clark, Matt Mayes, and Patrick O’Neal rounding out the top 5. Towles was able to secure the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time Award on Saturday.

If your name was Bradon or Brandon, the front was the place to be on Saturday in the KartSport North America Pro IAME Senior class, as Bradon Eves held back the efforts of Brandon Jarsocrak and Brandon Lemke for the top honors. Calvin Ming and Comet Kart Sales Fast Timer Jonathan Kotyk completed the top 5.

For the second time in 2 races, competitors in the Water for a Cause Kid Kart Class had to be on Cloud Nine. First the chance to run at Daytona, then the long backstretch at Jacksonville, which made the most minimal speed of a racing weekend seem like 100 mph. And for CJ Bowman on Day 1, that was the case, as the young driver scored the win over Comet Kart Sales Fast Timer Karsyn Walters, with Ayrton Grimm and Dusty Larson following closely behind.

Cody Hall successfully wrapped up Day1 action, taking the highly competitive Briggs and Stratton Racing Junior LO206 Class, as one of the top young Gold Cup standouts bested fellow Gold Cupper Mark Steube, Ryan Rogers, Jimmy Cole Jackson, and Nash Duyn. Steube took the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time award.

Sundays action found another recent Kid Kart graduate in the form of Caleb Gafrarar scoring his first career win in the crpracing.com Mini Swift class. To understand and appreciate the transition of these drivers from the beginning level to Mini Swift, you have to see it for yourself, as the mere difference in speed alone makes this an impressive step up to the next national level class. Chasing Gafrarar across the stripe was Sebastian Ng, followed by Comet Kart Sales Fast Time winner Brent Crews, Sam Corry, and Nicholas Terlecki.

Lance Fenderson roared back on Day 2, not only sweeping the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time honors, but also the Allison Racing Engines Pro IAME Junior class, again being chased by Ty Gibbs, with Pauley Massimino, Vincenzo Sarracino, and Alex Bertagnoli making up the top 5. With the win, Fenderson became the only driver for the weekend who was able to sweep his class and take the Checkered Motorsports Trophy, signifying Lance as the overall class winner for the weekend.

For Jason Welage, his runner up fortunes would change in the Woltjer Racing Engines Yamaha Sportsman class on Day 2, as he checked in for his first win of the weekend, topping Robert Noaker III, Rylee Engel, Comet Kart Sales Fast Timer Kaden Wharff, and Eli Trull for the Top 5.

Welage would back that up, also taking the IAME USA East Pro Swift Sportsman class, topping Noaker, Ferris, Wharff, and Rhule.

Not to be denied at his home track for a national class win, Sean Meier turned back the field Sunday, taking the finale for the Briggs and Stratton LO206 Senior drivers, topping Matt Mayes, Corey Towles, Jason Yarbrough, and Mike Greiner. Meier also claimed the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time award for the day as well.

Returning to victory lane as well was former WKA National Champion Mike Giessen, laying claim to the Sunday portion of the KartSport North America Pro IAME Senior class, topping the 3 B’S, with Brandon Jarsocrak, Saturday winner Bradon Eves, Brandon Lemke, and Derek Dignan for the top 5. Dignan’s top 5 run was quite the comeback, following a grinding crash on Saturday in which his tie rod broke, sending him crashing through safety barriers, thus placing a serious crimp in his ride as well. Dignan was fine. Jarsocrack took the top pole honors for the class.

On the heels of a second place run the day prior, Karsyn Walters roared back to take the Comet Kart Sales Fast Time award, as well as the Day #2 win in the Water for a Cause Kid Kart class, topping Ayrton Grimm, James Newell, Dusty Larson, and Samuel Newell.

The finale for the weekend found Jimmy Cole Jackson taking the Briggs and Stratton LO206 Junior class finale, besting Nash Duyn, Cade Frazier, Mark Steube, and Andrew Willis, with Frazier taking the Fast Time honors.

All overall winners for the weekend received a special Overall Winners Cup for the weekend, courtesy of Checkered Motorsports.

The August IAME Atlantic Challenge with Briggs and Stratton will also afford many drivers the opportunity to tackle the demanding Go Pro Motorplex Course under the lights, truly making this event very unique in every way, with huge prizes and great purse money being placed on the line for some of Americas top 2 and 4 Cycle racers.

“ We are excited to offer support to the new WKA Winter Cup program by offering 5 of their champions a free race entry into our inaugural IAME Atlantic Challenge with Briggs and Stratton”, stated Go Pro Motorplex partner Eric Jones. Jones also noted that several major teams have already committed to attending the August event since the announcement was made just a few days ago.

Additionally, the weekends event has also been very strategically placed on an off weekend for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. With the Motorplex right in the heart of NASCAR Race Shops in Mooresville, combined with Sprint Cup drivers looking for an opportunity to race anywhere, anytime, the Go Pro staff are currently working on getting a few of the stars of NASCAR to stop by and participate on that weekend.

More details regarding the purse, as well as prizes, will be released in the coming weeks. Be sure and stay updated to the Go Pro Motorplex website, as well as their Facebook page for additional details.

For now, Round 2 of the WKA Winter Cup at Jacksonville just became a little more important, as the Frigid Series will heat up the summer nights Aug 12 and 13 for the IAME Atlantic Challenge with Briggs and Stratton.

01.19.2016 - 2 time Daytona Winner Bertagnoli Heads Jax Winter Cup Entry List

01.19.2016 - 2 time Daytona Winner Bertagnoli Heads Jax Winter Cup Entry List

winterCup_logo.png

CONCORD, NC - As entries begin to pour into the WKA Office for the second stop of three for the all new WKA Winter Cup Series Feb 5-7 at 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida, the list is a virtual Who’s Who in 2 and 4 cycle competition. Headlining the entry list on the 2 cycle side is 2 time Daytona KartWeek winner Alex Bertagnoli, winner of both the Franklinkart.com Yamaha Junior, and Woltjer Racing Engines Pro IAME Junior classes. Bertagnoli leads the Merlin Chassis Camp, fresh off of 3 wins at Daytona, while fellow Merlin driver and defending Pro IAME Class champion Brandon Lemke has also filed his entry for the weekends activities. The Top Kart camp will be lead into battle with additional Daytona KartWeek winners as Dakota Pesek and Connor Ferris have filed their respective early entries. Pesek, the 2015 Yamaha Senior Pipe winner on the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup Series, continued his winning ways, taking one of the two Fullerton Karts USA Yamaha Senior wins at Daytona, while Ferris impressively took down the field in the IAME USA East Pro Swift Sportsman class. Other Top Kart drivers already filing early entries include 3 time 2015 champion Jason Welage, Kaden Wharff, Karsyn Walters, Austin and Emil Schulz, not to mention defending Kid Kart Champion Ben Maier, as well as 2015 5th place points driver Danny Dyszelski, both drivers now moving up into the CRPRACING.COM Mini Swift class this season.

A couple of the top Tony Kart drivers to be on the watch for include Ty Gibbs, fresh off of top 10 runs at Daytona. Gibbs will be running the Pro IAME Junior class, while chassis teammate Rylee Engel will be another young gun to be aware of, running both Yamaha Sportsman and Pro Swift Sportsman.

A top five run at Daytona will make Nicholas Terlecki one of the heavyweights on a Birel chassis, while Checkered Motorsports will be out in full force, lead by one of the top young female racers in Annie Rhule. A top 10 performer last year in the Swift Cup, Rhule will be challenging all in the Yamaha and Pro Swift Sportsman classes.

But while this will mark a welcomed return to Jacksonville for 2 cycle competition, the Winter Cup isn’t confined to just the 2 cycle racers. Following a more than impressive event at Daytona, the Briggs and Stratton LO 206 Junior and Senior classes will be loaded for bear, with Daytona winner Corey Towles leading the charge. Also joining Towles in the Senior ranks includes Coyote racers Sean Meier and Matt Mayes, with drivers such as Jimmy Cole Jackson, Cale and Cody Hall, and many others trying their hand at both 2 and 4 cycle competition.

Entry information for the Jax Winter Cup is online, as is the entry blank for the series third and final event March 4-6 at Go Pro Motorplex in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Competitors should be reminded there is very little difference in the Class Structure from the Daytona event to Jacksonville. With Daytona serving a dual purpose, as the first race for both the Winter Cup and the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup Series, with the exception of the Yamaha Junior and Senior classes, all other classes will be running, making a grand total of 8 classes per day, with the top 3 receiving awards each day, and an overall weekends champion per class recognized with special awards, courtesy of Checkered Motorsports. Prior to the heats and mains, drivers will go through the qualifying effort, with Fast Time awards being sponsored by Comet Kart Sales. Here’s a list of the Winter Cup classes at Jacksonville.

In addition to honoring the winners of the final race of the 3 race Winter swing, the Champions, as well as Top 3 finishers in each class will also be honored on the spot that Sunday as well, etching their names in the history books as the first ever WKA Winter Cup Champions.

CONCORD, NC - Beginning at the next Winter Cup event and for all WKA events in the future (including Gold Cup),  all Briggs LO206 engines will need to be sealed as shown in the photo.  The sealing wire must go thru one of the carburator attachment bolts and one of the valve cover bolts.  The holes should be a minimum of 5/64" (.078") and should be free of sharp edges that could cut the sealing wire.  Please insure that your engine bolts are drilled before coming to the track. CONCORD, NC - With the hangover from Daytona in the books, competitors have little time to prepare for the 2nd round of the all new WKA Winter Cup Series, combining many of the top 2 and 4 cycle competitors in the country, with stop #2 fittingly at 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida February 5-7. Following a stellar field of karts in their first appearance of the season at the World Center of Racing in Daytona, the high speed backstretch and very technical turns of 103rd Street will have people on the fence for every lap of competition. Led by the Briggs and Stratton Racing LO206 Senior class, as well as the Pro IAME Seniors, both sporting 40+ entries on the track in round 1, both the 2 and 4 cycle groups will be coming loaded for bear in the 2nd s top of the 3 race series, which will wrap up March 4-6 at Go Pro Motorplex in Mooresville, North Carolina.

WKA-logo-4C-CS3-small.png

CONCORD, NC - Starting at the next event, the Winter-Cup in Jacksonville, the Kid kart engines will need to be sealed as shown in the photo. The sealing wire will go thru one muffler bolt, the inner fan housing tab, and one of the fuel tank bracket bolts. This procedure will be in effect for all Winter Cup and Man Cup races going forward.

01.04.2016 - Rules prior to Winter Cup Events still apply

CONCORD, NC - With the 1st event in the books for the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup and Winter Cup Series, the focus shifts to Race #2 for both series respectively. While Daytona will serve as the only joint venue for the 2 programs, it is important to note that the all-new Winter Cup program will adhere to the same guidelines as all other national series programs. With many drivers looking to gain an edge going into race #2 for the Winter Cup Feb 5-7 at 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida, teams and competitors must adhere to the same policies with regards to practice on track prior to a national event.

Keeping in accordance with the other national series mandates, there will be no on track activity the Monday through Thursday prior to a national event. With that being said, realizing that 103rd Street is a public facility, WKA cannot forbid competitors from taking laps on the course, provided they run a different configuration than what the national layout will be. Any competitor, planning on running the second Winter Cup event at Jacksonville, will be automatically disqualified from the series second event if they are found to have taken laps on the nationally selected course.

This rule will be administered collectively between the World Karting Association and the North Florida Kart Club, in an ongoing effort to not only maintain the integrity and fairness of the national event, but also prevent the club and city from a disruption in any revenue to their normal program.

12.10.2015 - Important Note Regarding Tires for Daytona LO206 Participants

WKA-logo-4C-CS3-small.png

CONCORD, NC - As the latest edition of Daytona KartWeek draws closer for participants in Dirt, Sprint, and Road Race, the finishing touches are being placed on the events schedules, as well as rules for all classes participating December 27-30 at Daytona International Speedway. With the ever popular LO206 Senior and Junior classes joining the ranks of the initial race of the WKA Winter Cup Series at the Speedways Sprint Course, competitors need to be aware that a new set of tires will be required for qualifying on Day 1, with the same set of tires required to be used for drivers on both days of racing.

Much like many of the Mfg Cup classes, drivers may practice on any type of recognized and accepted Bridgestone Spec Tire. The official spec tire for the 2 classes are as follows.

LO206 Senior: Bridgestone YLC:  4.50x5 front, 7.10x5 rear

LO206 Junior:  Bridgestone YLC: 4.50x5 front, 6.00x5 rear

Activities for the Margay Sprint Nationals get underway with parking on Sunday December 27, followed by practice on December 28 and 2 full days of racing December 29 and 30.

CONCORD, NC - The beginning of the 2016 national points season for the World Karting Association will feature yet another new series for the new year. Joining the Dirt, Road Race, and Manufacturers Cup Series for Daytona Kart Week in December will be the all-new WKA Winter Cup Series. Combining a mixture of classes from both the Bridgestone Manufacturers Cup and RLV Tuned Exhaust Products Gold Cup Series, the Winter Cup will blend into the newest version of the Margay Sprint Championships at Daytona, with a total of 8 of the 10 classes running for Winter Cup points, as well as Mfg Cup points, for those running in 2 cycle.

Classes that will make up the all-new Winter Cup program include Mini Swift, Pro IAME Junior, Yamaha Sportsman, Pro IAME Senior, Pro TaG Sportsman, and Kid Karts from the Mfg Cup Series, while many are excited about the inclusion of the LO206 Junior and Senior classes from the Gold Cup Program.

With the mix of 2 series, drivers will follow the 2016 rules for the 2 respective national series, as per the WKA Tech Manual. 2 cycle drivers will follow the 2016 Mfg Cup engine, chassis, and tire specs, while LO206 will adhere to the policies for 2016 for Gold Cup.

While Race 1 for the Winter Cup also serves as the first national event of the year for the Mfg Cup Series, the format will remain the same throughout the 3 race series, with competitors participating in qualifying, 2 heat races, and a final each day, with awards available each day for competitors in the top 5.

Once the series departs Daytona, all eyes will focus on the series second event February 5-7 at 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, Florida, with the series finale to be 1 month later, March 4-6 at Go Pro Motorplex in Mooresville, North Carolina.

Points will be specific to the 3 race Winter Cup program, as there will be no divisional or regional points added in to determine the eventual Winter Cup Champion at the season ending event, thus allowing Champions, as well as the second and third place finishers in the overall standings to be determined, and crowned in Mooresville.

Many companies, such as Margay and Ionic Edge Chassis, have incorporated an arrive and drive program for Daytona. Be sure and contact these companies if you would like to take part in the inaugural edition of the WKA Winter Cup Series.

For those unable to make it to Daytona, the February Entry Blank for the Jacksonville event is online, as well as the Class structure. Be sure and click on Racing Series on the World Karting Home Page, which will then allow you to check out the 2016 national schedule, class structure, and future entry blank information.

“ We are extremely pleased to be able to present our Mfg Cup national schedule to the karting public as early as we can, thus giving them the opportunity to make their plans for all the series they compete in, well in advance” stated WKA President John Ferris.

While still working on class structure for both series, WKA Officials, as well as the respective Competition Committees, are finalizing proposals that will be announced shortly. While the bulk of the Mfg Cup National Classes will clearly remain in place, the Winter Cup will be a strong mix of IAME Classes, as well as LO206 Junior and Senior Classes, providing an awesome mix of 2 and 4 cycle competition, taking many back to the days of old, before the 2 series became independent of one another.

The level of energy has not been measured this high in quite some time in both 2 and 4 Cycle racing, as WKA continues to provide their racers the best venues and class options available in their quest for the ultimate national title!!!!
